Transcription of 1823 Pension Application of John Forehand

On this first day of April in the year 1823 personally appeared in open
court being a court of record for said county having a jurisdiction
unlimited in point of amount and professing the power of fine and
imprisonment John Forehand aged sixty eight years resident in the
county aforesaid, who being duly sworn according to law doth on his
oath Declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows.
That he enlisted in Staunton in Virginia in the company commanded
by Capt. [Mell?] about the year 1777, that he was afterwards attached
to the sixteenth Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. Gist in the Brigade
of Genl. Muhlenburg, that the period for which he enlisted was three
years, That He was in the battle of Monmouth and stony point and at
the siege of Charleston where he was wounded through the right breast
& shoulder and taken prisoner; That he was afterwards taken round from
Charleston to Williamsburg by the British for the purpose of being
exchanged.  When he and others made their escape from the vessel in
which they were confined and that he was afterwards discharged at
Williamsburg having served out the period for which he was Enlisted,
And further, that he was born in the State of Pennsylvania and is now
and was on the 18th day of March in the year 1818 a resident citizen of
the United States, and that he has not by gift or in any other manner
Disposed of his property or any part there of with a view to bring
himself within the provisions of an act of Congress Entitled an Act
to provide for certain persons employed in the land or Naval service
of the United States in the revolutionary War and that he has not nor
has any person in trust for him any property, security, or contract
nor has any Debts Due to him nor has he any income of any kind or
description  And further that he has no family living with him upon
who he can depend for Support.

     Rockbridge County, to wit;
I, Andrew Reid, clerk of the court of said county do hereby certify that
the foregoing oath and the Schedule annexed thereto are truly copied from
the records of said county.  And I do further certify that it is the
opinion of said court that the said Forehand is possessed of no property
of any value.
     In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed
my office seal at Lexington the seat of justice of the said county
this 1st day of April 1823 and in the 47th year of the Commonwealth.
