SOME DESCENDANTS OF HANS GEORGE SPANG

This is the line from Hans George Spang that I descend from. I have some information on the other families in this file and will be glad to share anything I have with others who are interested in this family. I. Hans George Spang was born in Germany. There was a Hans Jerg Spang christened 11 December 1676 at Wurttemberg Jagstkreis Jagstzell, Katholisch Church son of Andreas and Catharina Spang. Although this is too early for our Han George’s birth, there may be a relationship.

Hans George Spang arrived in Philadelphia on 26 August 1751 on the ship "Anderson" and settled in Greeenwich Township, Berks County, PA. An unproven narrative says that prior to his arrival in America, he had served with the Luxembourg army in Europe and for some violation of the rules of that army, he was forced to flee to America.

His wife’s name was Anna Margaretha. They were married in Germany. On the tax lists of 1767-1768, he appears as a weaver in Greenwich Township owning 50 acres of land. He later moved to Heidelberg Township where he died.

  5. Peter Spang , b. 6 Aug 1758, prob. in Greenwich Twp., Berks Co. Marr. 1784, Elizabeth Sherman . Died 5 June 1829 in Berks Co.
  6. Frederick Spang , b. 1762. Marr. 25 Dec 1786, Maria Margaretha Zelher . Died 1 Jan 1826.

II. Michael Spang was born 29 September 1742 in Wurttemberg, Germany. He was the son of Hans George and Anna Margaretha Spang. He came to America with his father on 26 August 1751 on the ship, “Anderson”. He was married 11 June 17965 in Oley Township, Berks County to Elizabeth Bechton/Becht. Her parents are unknown. The marriage is also recorded in the records of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church in Douglas Township, Berks County. Elizabeth died 8 January 1826.

In 1767 and 1768, Michael was listed on the tax rolls of Ruscombmanor in Berks County. He served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. Growl’s 4th Company, 5th Battalion, Berks County Militia. He died 5 March 1821 at Reading, PA at age 78 and is buried in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Reading.

  7. Christian Spang , b. 14 Dec 1787. Marr. 28 Jan 1810, Anna Homann . Served in the War of 1812. Died 23 July 1840.
