E-mail: Enidwalter@aol.com     Mon Sep 1 16:20:42 2003
Name: Enid Rock
Subject: Mary Walsh, 1878, County Durham
Surnames: WALSH, MC.KEW, KEW, THOMPSON
Query: My great aunt Mary (known as Polly) Walsh was born in Shincliffe, in County Durham, England on 1st December 1878 (I think)! She was possibly born with her surname either being Mc.Kew or Kew (as her parents were formerly known by this name and apparently changed their name to Walsh - somewhere between 1871 and 1881 - reason currently unknown). In 1871 they lived in Shincliffe near Houghall in County Durham and were named either Mc.Kew or Kew. "Polly" had three elder brothers - John William - James Gatte Marshall - and Robert - (all named either Mc.Kew or Kew at birth). By the 1881 Census they were living in Elvet in County Durham and named Walsh. Nothing more is known of the family until James (my grandfather) was married in Ryhope, Sunderland, County Durham in 1897. "Polly" was then living with the family in Grangetown, Sunderland, County Durham - and eventually married a Mr Herbert Thompson who had been married before and had a young family - which Polly subsequently brought up. Polly died in 1963 in Grangetown. I would really appreciate any information that may be available on the reason why or when the family changed their name from Mc.Kew or Kew to Walsh. I recognise that this is probably a difficult query but would appreciate any assistance in my search. Maybe, just maybe there is someone out there who is connected and may know the answer or may be able to shed some light on a reason for the name change. Thank you.

Query: My gr-Grandmother was born around 1870 in Dublin and died in Ohio believed to be Cincinnati Ohio around 1899. My gr-grandmmother's first name and last name has been spelled in many different ways. I have been searching Susan Welsh who was married to William Reed. The two of them were Theatrical perforformers. The reason I have been searching Susan Walsh and Welsh is because of the birth records for Dayton Ohio 1891. This is where I found my gr-aunt's birth record and the name Susetta Walsh appeared. I then found the Baptismal Certificate from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dayton Ohio for Catherine Elizabeth Reed and the mothers name was Susan Welsh it was dated Jan 13 1891. It was believed that Susan died around 1898 or 1899 from child birth. I also noticed that William was at least 16 years Susan senior. Susan and William had three children that lived, Catherine (Kitty) Smith, William Reed and Robert Reed. When my grandfather Robert was between the ages of 5, 6 or 7 his mothr Susan died. Since my grandfather was born in 1894 and his mother was 29 when she died makes her dying around 1898 or 1899. It was also said that my grandfather Robert Reed and his older brother William Bill Reed were taken away and placed in an Orphanage in Ohio after Susan death. If anyone can help please do. I would Love to hear from anyone that may have the history for Susan. I don't know if Susan was her first name. But The first name that I have found on records have been Susan or Suzetta Walsh or Welsh. Thank you

The children were 1) Eleanor born 1886 who later married Frank BARLOW, 2) Joseph born 1888, 3) Edmund born 1890 joined the Army but died in 1918, and 4) Frederick born 1892 who married prior to 1920 a woman called Helen. After their parents died the children moved to 38 Linden Avenue, Dayton, sometime prior to 1920. My goal is to locate any living descendants of this WALSH family. I know nothing about Frank BARLOW, and little about Joseph Walsh, and Edmund died unmarried, so I expect the easiest one to research would be Frederick WALSH who married Helen M. (surname unknown). Subject: Margaret Walsh emigrated to NYC c1920
Surnames: WALSH, CLAYTON
Query: Margaret Walsh, born in Athlone in Nov. 1899, an only daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Walsh, nee Dutton. left Cork around the 1920's. At that point in time, her Parents and 4 Brothers had moved to reside in Cork City.
Margaret emigrated to NYC around the 1920's, and worked as a servant for various families in the Manhattan area. She later met and Married an Edmund Clayton (DOB = March,1900) I believe he was an ex WW1 Vet. Edmund was a native New Yorker, believed to have resided in the Manhattan area.
Their last known address was 904, Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10025. They had no offspring.
Both Edmund and Margeret died in 1972, March and July respectively. I am anxious to find out as much as I can of their lives and times in NY. i.e. The date Margaret emigrated from Ireland, the place and date of their Marriage , who were their Marriage witnesses, their place of Worship and place of Burial.
I am seeking this information for my Father, Margaret's brother, who is now in his 90th. Year.
Margaret could have initially resided with her Aunts or Uncles. The Walsh's, from Athlone, Co. Westmeath, one of whom was a James Walsh had previously settled in Brooklyn, NY and the Dutton's settled in Hartford,Connecticut. Anyone who maybe able to further my limited history of Margaret and Edmund Clayton; and/or James Walsh who died around 1935, Brooklyn, would be of immense assistence to me.

Query: Looking for siblings of Archbishop Wm. J. Walsh of Dublin. His parents were Ralph and Mary Walsh. William was baptized at the Parish of SS. Michael and John on Feb. 2, 1841. William's father, Ralph, came from an old and respected stock of farmers and shopkeepers, whose home was in County of Kerry. Ralph was born at Tarbert and apprenticed to a watchmaker in Tralee, then went to Waterford and Dublin, opened a business as a watchmaker and jewler at Essex Quay. He married Mary Pierce, whose family was connected with Galway. Ralph died in 1867; Mrs. Walsh died in April 1875. They are buried in Glasnevin Cemetery. Her sister, Eliza Pierce (William's godmother) was buried in the same grave in 1887. My great grandfather was Thomas Walsh, who came to the United States. His daughter, Margaret Walsh Brandow, is my grandmother. I have not been able to fill in the family gaps, but Grandmother referred to the Archbishop as her "Uncle" (perhaps Uncle, perhaps "great uncle"). I would appreciate any help with names, dates, places of this family. Thanks.

Edward Welsh, deceased, was for many years one of the leading farmers and most highly respected citizens of Washington township. He was born in Kings county,( Durrow parish, Offaly or Westmeath I believe in Ballycahan Townland where his father is listed as Edward WALSH in Griffiths) Ireland, on Christmas day, 1827, and was a son of Edward (WALSH?) and Lizzie (Coogan) Welsh, the former also a native of Kings and the latter of County West Meath. Throughout life the father followed farming on the Emerald Isle, and died there in 1851, while his wife passed away in 1866. They had a family of ten children, including Edward, of this review; Lizzie, who married John Quarter, and both died in Ireland; Mary, who wedded Edward Cunningham (also of Ballycahan Townland?), and both are now deceased; Rosie, who married a Mr. Keevy, and both died in Connecticut; Katie, who died in Ireland; David, who died at the age of twenty-one years; and Thomas, who married Catherine Dempsey and came to America, where he died in 1871, his wife in 1860. The other members of the family remained in Ireland, and little is known of them.
In 1852 our subject crossed the Atlantic on an English sailing vessel, the St. George, which was seven weeks in making the voyage, during which time there were two very severe storms. On landing in New York, Mr. Welsh was met by his brother James, who had come to the United States in 1850. For two years he worked as a stone-mason in New York and then went to Dixon, Illinois, where he was employed as a farm hand for seven years. In 1858 he came to Clinton county, Iowa, and purchased eighty acres of land at thirty dollars per acre, it being a government claim owned by Paddy Flynn. With an ox team Mr. Welsh drove to Maquoketa, where he got his deed made out. At that time there were no houses between his place and Lyons, and the country round about was all wild prairie. Returning to Illinois, Mr. Welsh engaged in farming on rented land until 1861, when he erected a small house upon his farm in this county and located thereon. He broke the land with ox teams and soon had the place under a high state of cultivation. Prospering in his new home, he added to his landed possessions until at the time of his death he had three hundred and sixty acres, to which his widow and son have since added a tract of one hundred and twenty acres on section six, Washington township, while the original farm is on sections seventeen and eighteen. Mr. Welsh died October 4, 1898, honored and respected by all who knew him, and was buried in St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery. He was a devout member of the Catholic church of Deep Creek township, and was a stanch supporter of the Democratic party and its principles. On the 15th of July, 1866, in Center Grove, Mr. Welsh was married by Rev. Father Scallon to Miss Catherine Reed, who was born in Queens county, Ireland, march 17, 1846, and was fifteen years of age when she came to America with her parents, John and Mary (Mahar) Reed, also natives of Queens county. They located in Center Grove, this state, where Mr. Reed bought one hundred and twenty acres of land, to which the family subsequently added two hundred and forty acres. He died September 10, 1896, aged eighty-four years, and his wife departed this life September 11, 1900, aged ninety. They were members of St. Patrick’s Catholic church, and most estimable people. Of their six children Mrs. Welsh is the eldest; Thomas, the second in order of birth, died at the age of thirty years; William married Lizzie Manyon and resides near Lexington, Dawson county, Nebraska; John married Maggie Bulger and makes his home in Center Grove, Iowa; Mary wedded John Snyder and died in Center Grove, June 18, 1900; and Richard died at the age of twenty-two years.
The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Welsh were as follows: Edward, who is mentioned below; Thomas, who lives near Delmar; John and Richard, both at home with their mother; Mary, who is keeping house for her brother Thomas; James, who is also with Thomas; and Michael, Frank and Charles, who are all with their mother; William is deceased.
Edward Welsh, Jr., was born in this county, April 19, 1867, and attended the district schools near his home until fifteen years of age. During the following five years he assisted his father in the cultivation of the farm. He was married in the Deep Creek Catholic church, February 15, 1896, by Rev. Peter O’Dodd, to Miss Maggie Cleary, who was born on the 24th of August, 1864, and is a daughter of Patrick C. Cleary and Margaret Ellen Welch. After his marriage Edward Welsh, Jr., commenced farming on his own account, and operated rented land until the fall of 1900, when he purchased one hundred and twenty acres on section seventeen, Washington township, on which he has made a number of useful improvements. He raises a high grade of stock for market, and in business affairs is meeting with well-deserved success. Religiously he is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church at Deep Creek township, and is a young man highly respected and esteemed by all who know him.
