The Old Ladies Home at Comly St. and State Rd., once the mansion of Matthias W. Baldwin, was purchased for use as a non-denominational home for aged women.  In 1940, there were 111 women over 65 living there.

wpe8.jpg (28766 bytes) Matthias Baldwin was one of the most important industrialistial figures in the 19th century.  He was the largest manufacturer of locomotive engines in the world.  His locomotives led the way across the American West and played a key part in the transportation system that supported the Union Army during the Civil War.  He was born in Elizabethtown, NJ in 1795 and died at his mansion in Wissinoming in 1866.
