Old Ladies Home

The Old Ladies Home was incorporated on 7 April, 1875 and had it's initial location on Frankford Avenue.   In 1888 the Home moved to the old Baldwin Mansion on the Delaware River, in the vicinity of the area now occupied by the Quaker City Flea Market.    After building a 15 room addition and installing steam heat, 52 residents (called variously "inmates" or "beneficiaries") moved in.  In 1890 and 1892, additional wings were added that included a small hospital, a diet kitchen, and nurse's rooms.  In 1893, a new kitchen, laundry, and servant's rooms were added as was electric lighting and fire escapes.  In 1896, another wing was started which added 27 additional rooms.  In 1927 there were 91 residents.  In 1940, there were 111 women over 65 living there.

Many of the records associated with the Old Ladies Home are at the Temple Urban Archives at Temple University, Philadelphia.
