Daughter of Joseph B. Sell and Elizabeth Rhodes.
Martha H. Sell was born at Altoona Blair County Pennsylvania on 13
January 1869 and died at her home 10 miles S.W. of Colome, Tripp
County South Dakota on 10 June 1910. She was 41 years 5 months 9 days
old. She had been sick for only 2 weeks and was thought to be
improving. She had sat up some during this day, but death came
suddenly about 7 O'clock in the evening. It was a shock to all. Mrs.
Keever was United to the Dunkard Church when she was 16 years old and
continued to live a patient, uncomplaining, Christian life till the
time of her death.
When 11 years old she moved with her parents to Cameron, MO. where she
met and married Joseph Perry Keever. To this union were born two sons
and two daughters. Joseph Oliver Earl, Beulah Sarah, Perry Elias and
Martha Marie. The high regard and esteem was attested to by the 70-80
people who attended her funeral. The sermon was preached by L.M.
Campbell. The text was taken form Isiah 64:6 "We all do fade as a
leaf."
In the absence of an established burial ground in this new and
recently opened homestead land, she was laid away temporally on a hill
overlooking the area. The next year the Colome Cemetery was staked out
and she was moved to the final resting place. She was one of the
first buried in the new cemetery. Her resting place was on a hill as a
precaution against water ever standing on her grave. The low flat
lands in the wetter Missouri region often had this trouble.
Obituary taken from the paper parts not covered above.
Martha H. Sell was united in marriage to Joseph Keever, March 7, 1894,
and resided on their farm near Parnell, Missouri until the opening of
"Tripp County, South Dakota" Mr. Keever drew a claim in the opening of
the Rosebud and went to South Dakota and established their new home in
the spring of 1909. Here they lived one year in peace and happiness,
when death stepped in and took their beloved wife and mother.
Mrs. Keever was a woman devoted to her family and only numbered her
friends by her acquaintances.
She leaves besides the husband to mourn her loss, four children, the
youngest being a sweet little girl of two, who has been the light of
the house since her coming. Also four brothers and four sisters and a
host of friends both in her old and new home, who unite in sympathy
with the bereaved ones.
