This is the Mr. John Atwood who was an Assistant in 1638, not the John
Wood, alias Atwood, who also lived in Plymouth. He apparently had
planned before 8 April 1633 to come to Plymouth, for on that date John
Doane sold the indenture of Walter Harris—who had bound himself to
serve Mr. Atwood of London under the command of Mr. John Doane of New
Plymouth—to Henry Howland. On 30 December 1636 John Atwood, late of
London, gentleman, bought John Doane's half interest in a house and
land near Plain Dealing that they had jointly owned for £60. Mr. John
Atwood was made a freeman on 3 January 1636/37. He served on the
grand jury in 1636/37. In 1637 he was on a committee to determine
what to do with the beaver trade. On 6 August 1637 Thomas Roberts was
sentenced to be severely whipped and to be returned to his master, Mr.
John Atwood, for the rest of his term, and he was not to get any
future land grants (but an added note provided, "except bee manefest
better desert". Atwood had various land grants at Plymouth. On 24
October 1638 Mr. Atwood hired John Long as a servant. On 5 March
1638/39 Mr. John Atwood assigned the indenture of William Taylor, son
of William Taylor of Boddington, Cornwall, England, a carpenter, to
Thomas Little. Apparently, Atwood entered into other indenture
agreements. On 16 May 1639 he agreed that since Job Cole had paid the
passage of Thomas Gray and given him clothing, he would assign all of
his interest in Gray’s services to Cole. Atwood was chosen in 1641 to
serve on the committee which replaced the Court of Assistants in
administering land grants. In 1641 he was chosen as a deputy for
Plymouth, and in 1641/42 he became the colony's treasurer. In his
will dated 20 October 1643, sworn 5 June 1644, he gave twelve pence to
any of his brethren and their children who asked for it, and he named
a kinsman William Crow; his brother and sister Lee and their children
Ann and Mary; and his wife Anne Atwood. His wife dated her will 27
April 1650, sworn 3 December 1654, in which she named her brother and
sister now living in New Plymouth, Robert and Mary Lee, and their
children, and her loving nephew William Crow. A memorandum dated 3
March 1642/43 on a deed from Francis Billington to Mr. John Atwood was
witnessed by a Harmon Atwood. Pope has a Herman Atwood of
Sanderstead, co. Surrey, cordwainer, as a servant to brother Buttall
in Boston, who became deacon of the second church, but there is
nothing else in the records to indicate any possible relationship with
John Atwood.
