ANDY'S FAMILY - KELLERMAN / WELTER BRANCH
This page contains brief family summaries for one of
Andy's
ancestral branches, the Kellerman, Butzen, Welter, Van
Melis,
and related families from the Kreise (Counties) of Geldern
and
Kempen in the North Rhein of Germany, near the
border with
the Dutch province of Limburg.
The Family Summaries pages, such as this one, do not
contain
complete listings of ancestors or their siblings or
descendants.
They are just intended to help you determine if you
want to search
the Detailed Genealogies or Ancestors
pages of this web site.

Kellerman / Welter / Butzen / Van Melis:
| One of the children of Anton EITING (born 1824) and Gertrude MICKE (born 1838) (see separate pages) -- one that fortunately for us, I might add, survived the earlier-mentioned fatal drowning accident in the Fox River -- was my mother’s father, William Bernard EITING, born 1864 in Hollandtown, Wisconsin. He married my grandmother, Sibilla Marie KELLERMAN, who was born in 1869 (see below for their children). Sibilla was the youngest of seven children (all born in Straelen between 1855 and 1869) of Johann Herman KELLERMAN born 1829 and Anna Margaretha WELTER born 1825. The parents and we believe all but one of the children emigrated to Wisconsin in 1882. We know the spouses and descendants of some of the children (see Detailed Genealogies pages of this website). |

Johann Herman’s parents were Peter Heinrich KELLERMAN and Anna Catharina BUTZEN; while Anna Margaretha’s were Peter Johann WELTER and Anna Catharina VAN MELIS. All of these families were Catholic.
The KELLERMAN, WELTER and VAN MELIS families, were from the medium-sized town of Straelen (pronounce “Shhtraah len”) which is only 2 miles from the Dutch border. It is in Kreis Geldern (may now be in Kreis Kleve) in the German province of North Rhein. Straelen is 27 miles northwest of Düsseldorf. Going back one more generation, however, Johann Herman KELLERMAN was from Oedt, and his father was from Vorst as was his wife [BUTZEN]. Oedt and Vorst (pronounced Forst) were just south of Kempen in Kreis Kempen-Krefeld, also in the North Rhein (about 18 miles west northwest of Düsseldorf). Welter is pronounced “VAIL ter”, and Van Melis is “Fon MAY leese”.
My mother’s parents, William Eiting and Sybilla Kellerman had eight children, born from 1899 to 1910: Margaret "Gretchen" [KREISCHER], Katherine [HIGGINS], Antoniette [PEARSON], Gertrude [HART], Henry [RICKABY], Arnold VANREMORTEL], Marie [WEGNER], and Bernadet (died as an infant).
The NAMES in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are surnames of their spouses.
