Notes

August F. J. ZECHEL

See notes and sources listed for his wife, Anna Wegner. Also see his obit in Ref. 400. He was survived by 4 gc, among other people.

Anna WEGNER

Anna Wegner, the daughter of Fredricka Bulgerin and Carl Wegner of Hebron, was born in Watertown Wisconsin in 1869, and August Zechel was born that same year in Pomerania and emigrated to Milwaukee six years later with his parents. He went to school in Milwaukee. "Annie" and August married in 1891 at the Lutheran church in Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin, with the Rev. J. Haas officiating. August worked as an assembler at Northwestern Manufacturing. Later he worked at the James Manufacturing Company. They lived in Racine for a short time but then most of their lives in Ft. Atkinson. They had two children, Carl and Lawrence. August died in 1930, 25 years before Anna, and was buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Ft. Atkinson. August was survived by two sisters, Mrs. George Brink and Mrs. John Wisch. Before her death after being hospitalized for four months in 1955, Anna lived with her sister Mrs. Henry (Ida) Sievert. Anna was survived by her two sons, 6 gc, 5 ggc, 3 sisters: Mrs Martha Loek of Milwaukee & Mrs. Sievert and Miss Bertha Wegner both of Ft. Atkinson, and two brothers, August and Charles both of Ft. Atkinson. Two sisters died before her.

Gustav LOEK

See notes and sources for his wife Martha Wegner, including part of the text of his obituary.

Martha WEGNER

Martha married Gustav Loek in about 1900. They went to St. Pauls church in Ft. Atkinson. Gustav died in 1925. In 1956 Martha lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She died 41 years later in 1966. Both are buried in Evergreen cemetery in Ft. Atkinson. The following is a portion of Gustav's obituary:

"Gust Loek, a former Fort Atkinson grocer, died at Wauzeka (Crawford County) Wisconsin.... due to complications, following a two years illness....He came to Fort Atkinson 30 years ago and worked for many years as a clerk in the Fred Heuchel grocery store. Later he entered the grocery business with his brother, Fred Loek. Nine years ago he moved to Madison where he was in the grocery business until three years ago when he went to Wauzeka to open a general store."

They also apparently lived in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin at some point.

Arthur LOEK

He lived in Madison, Wisconsin. He did not marry. He died two months after his mother, and was buried in Evergreen cemetery in Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin. His name was also spelled as "Lake" in his obituary.

Henry Otto SIEVERT

See notes and sources for his wife Ida Wegner.

Ida A. WEGNER

Ida Wegner was born in 1871 in Watertown, Wisconsin and in 1898 at St Pauls Lutheran church in Ft. Atkinson Wisconsin married Otto Henry (went by Henry) Sievert who was born in Farmington Township, Jefferson County, Wisconsin about 1873. They lived in Watertown and Cold Springs Wisconsin, but later moved to Ft. Atkinson -- their daughter and only child Meta indicated "because the Romig family lived there". Ida and her cousin Emma Wegner (Ida's dad's brother Albert's daughter) were close friends. Meta has a scrapbook containing pictures of Emma. Henry was a member of the men's society at St Pauls church and was on the church council for more than 23 years. Henry died in 1948 after a four year illness and Ida died eight years later of a stroke. Both were buried in Evergreen cemetery in Ft. Atkinson.

By one report, Henry had four brothers that reached adulthood, and every one of them also were known by their middle names (In fact, it has gotten to the point where I don't know for sure which is their first name and which their middle -- e.g., is it Henry Otto or is it Otto Henry). His obituary however lists five surviving brothers: Fred, Albert, Carl, Walter (Theodore Walter), all of Ft. Atkinson, and Paul of Watertown. Meta has a picture of all six adult Sievert brothers. Another brother, Julius, died young. Also see notes for Henry Otto's father for more info on the siblings. The parents of the Sievert children (father's name was John) were married in Farmington, and the mother died at the home of Albert, who reportedly was her "favorite son". Fred is possibly the Fred Sievert mentioned as being the father of Margaret Sievert (Mrs. John Daly) in Margaret's obituary.

Ref 322 says death year was 1958, not 1956 as I had previously.

August Carl Herman WEGNER

August Wegner and Katherine Fleming were both born in 1877. They were married in 1904 and farmed near Jefferson Wisconsin for 20 years (at least part of this time on August's parent's farm). August later worked for James Manufacturing Co. up until his retirement. They were members of St. Pauls Lutheran church. Katherine died in 1959 after a two month illness. August spent the last five years of his life in the Jefferson Hospital and died in 1966. He was survived by 4 gd and 1 ggd. Both are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Ft. Atkinson Wisconsin.

His birth record in St Peters Luth church, Helenville, Wisconsin.

BOOTLEGGERS in the family? The Daily Jefferson County Union newspaper of Feb 28, 2000, "looked back" 75 years, and published the following article that may well refer to this August Wegner (the more senior August Wegner that was born 1852 and married Amelia Moede would have 73 years old and besides, at least in 1929, lived on Whitewater Street, not on Roberts Street): "Sponge squads have been busy in Fort Atkinson, Jefferson and Johnson Creek the past ten days and their raids have resulted in the arrest of several men. Last Thursday afternoon state agents raided the Smoke Shop in this city and found several gallons of colored alcohol and some wine. The Proprieter, Theo. Heiser, was arrested and is now out on bail. Tuesday afternoon Sheriff John Gruell and his deputies raided the August Wegner home in Roberts St. and found considerable mash and wine. At Jefferson several raids were made by Mr. Gruel and deputies, but only on man, Wilbur Moore, living on a farm, was arrested. ........"

Katherine Theresa FLEMING

May be Catherine with a "c". Also see notes and sources for her husband August Wegner.

Harry WEGNER

Harry died in Humboldt Nebraska in 1932 at the age of 27 of an accidental gunshot wound to the abdomen. He picked up a gun that a friend had been cleaning, and it discharged. An investigating Marshall later picked up the gun and it again discharged. No one was charged in the incident. Harry was a member of the "Boys of 22" Club from his highschool and was the fourth of that club to die.

Carl Herman August WEGNER

Carl (went by name Charlie) was a tool and die maker that worked for James Mfg Co. for 30 years. He retired in 1952, died in 1972 after being a patient for 6 months at the Ft. Atkinson (Wisconsin) Convalescent Center. Christine Frodel was born on March 4 (1st?) 1889 in Australia and emmigrated to the USA when 12 years old. More information on Christina can be found on page 53 of Meta Sievert's <76> 1967 scrapbook (now possibly in the possession of Meta's granddaughter Monique Karlen). Carl and Christina belonged to St. Pauls Lutheran church in Ft. Atkinson and were buried at Evergreen cemetery in that city. Ref 385 says he was confirmed in St. Paul's Evan. Luth church, Ft. Atkinson, class of 1899 and was still a member in 1961.

Christine Helen FRODEL

Also, see notes and sources for her husband Carl Herman August Wegner. Her obit in Ref 397 says that Emil Marek is her half brother, who survived her.

Marie Ruth WEGNER

Marie died at the age of nine of pneumonia two weeks after an operation for a ruptured appendix at a Madison Wisconsin hospital. She had attended Caswell School. Meta Sievert <76> was her church sponsor. Also see notes and sources for her father Carl Herman August Wegner.

George RAITHEL

See notes and sources for his wife Marie (Mary) Wegner. His obit in Ref 393 indicates his surviving siblings are Fred, Frank, Adam, Mrs. Henry Heth, and Mrs. Andrew Gladsen.

Marie WEGNER

For a photo of Marie (Mary), see Image attached to her sister Anna.

Marie (apparently went by Mary) married George Raithel in 1894 when she was 26 and died nine years later at the age of 37 of tuberculosis at home on Clarence Street after having been ill for six years, but was worse for only the last five months. They belonged to St Pauls Lutheran church. She was buried at Evergreen cemetery in Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin.

Karl Wilhelm WEGNER

Karl was confirmed (April 26, 1874) and married (to Bertha Pauline Lenz in 1881) in MAMRE Moravian church, Watertown, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Martha Florey (Ref 312) says Karl was confirmed at the same time as her great great half-uncle Franz Wegner. There is some question as to whether or not they divorced. Also see notes for his wife Bertha. I had previously entered his birth place as Pamperin, but this is likely Panzerin, south of Schivelbein in Kreis Schivelbein/Belgard. Panzerin is about 4 miles east/southeast of Schlönwitz. In fact, his marriage record clearly says Panzerin.

The family group photo given in Reference 318 gives a truely cross-sectional look at the Wegner and Moede families. In this one photo are represented several generations, four branches of the Wegner family, 3 branches of the Moede family, as well as the Henzel family (don't know where they fit) and other families, all apparently brought together for a confirmation. Some of these identifications are not for certain (see next note for discussion) Four Wegner branches: 1. Of the senior Wegner generation, August born 1852 is present as well as his wife Amelia Moede born 1859 (which is the tie between the Wegner and Moede families). 2. Carl Wegner born 1860 and his wife and two of their children are present. This Carl is the son of August's older half-brother, Gustav. 3. Anna Wegner born 1869 and her sister Mary born 1868 are present. Anna and Mary are daughters of August's older half-brother Karl (not to be confused with the Carl Wegner born 1860), and 4. Bertha Groehler born about 1863 is present. Bertha Groehler is the daughter of August Groehler and the step daughter of August Wegner's sister Bertha Wegner. The three branches of the Moede family are represented by three Moede siblings: August Wegner's wife Amelia (mentioned above), Mary Moede born 1866, and Gustav Moede born 1860.

Family Group Picture of the Wegner's, Moede's, and others. Judging from the ages of the known people, I would guess this was taken about 1895. The event that brought these families together is not known. John MODE and his wife Mary Jean of Fort Atkinson Wisconsin currently have an original of this photo, from which these copies were made. Apparently on the back of the photo, was a list of names. A scanned image of this list is enclosed. The list apparently starts in the front right corner of the picture and goes around in a clockwise direction, and ends with the girl sitting on the floor in front of the table. I'll use this same convention in describing the pictures: **** "Mr & Mrs Carl Wegner & Baby" (sitting in front on right): There are a number of Carl's in the family, but based on ages, I think this one must be Carl WEGNER born July 3, 1860 the son of Gustav R. L. WEGNER and Wilhelmina PUTZER. Carl's wife was Bertha Pauline LENZ born June 16, 1863, the daughter of Fred LENZ and Maria ALBRECHT. I was previously not aware of any of Carl and Bertha's children, but I assume the baby they are holding, and the person sitting on the floor in front of the table (identified on the list as "Clara Wegner, Carl's daughter") are both their children. Just for completeness, Gustav R. L. was the oldest (known) son of Wilhelm WEGNER and Wilhelm's first wife Hanna Marie ZENKE. **** "Mrs & Mrs Aug. F. Wegner" (sitting next to above): Based on comparisons to other know photos, this is August Frank WEGNER born Dec 15, 1852 the son of the above mentioned Wilhelm WEGNER and his second wife Caroline ROMIG. August's wife was Amelia MOEDE born July 20, 1859 the daughter of August MOEDE and Caroline GROEHLER. Again, just for completeness, August MOEDE was the son of Johan Jakob MOEDE born 1794 (in Schivelbein Pomerania! Johan Jakob had a daughter-in-law who died in Schlönwitz Pomerania !! and also a grandson who was born in Schlönwitz!) and Dorothea Louise NICKEL born 1799 in Rutzenhagen Pomerania. Caroline Groehler is the brother to the August GROEHLER that married Bertha C. H. WEGNER (daughter of Wilhelm and his second wife Caroline ROMIG). Whew! **** "Mary MODE OETTMEYER" (seated behind the table): Note the change in spelling of MOEDE. In German records, this family name is usually written without the first "E" but with an umlaut "O" (Ö). Mary MOEDE born August 24, 1866 is the sister to the Amelia mentioned above. She married John OETTMEYER. **** "Gust MODE", "Mary Ehlers MODE" (sitting together on the left): Gustav Christopher Albert MODE born September 17, 1860 is a brother to Amelia and Mary. Gustav married Anna Maria Christiane ("Mary") EHLERS. In this photo, Gust looks to be too old for someone that was born in 1860, so maybe we don't have them assigned properly. **** "Louise Gums Koester" (standing left): Louise GUMS was born Oct 7, 1867, married John KOESTER Feb 15, 1894, and she died April 12, 1940. Not sure at this point where she fits, but I don't think it would be very hard to track down. She was survived by a son Carl, three daughters: Helen, Mrs. William Thompson, and Katherine, a brother, William Gums, and two sisters: Mrs. Frederick Winters and Mrs. Clarence Leschinsky. **** "Emile Henzel Dallman" and "William Henzel" (standing 2nd and 3rd from left): Don't know who they are. **** "Anna Wegner Zechel" (standing 4th from left): Anna WEGNER born Sep 10, 1869 the daughter of Carl F. W. WEGNER (this is not the Carl Wegner mentioned earlier) and Frederiche BULGERIN. Carl F. W. was the son of Wilhelm WEGNER and Wilhelm's first wife Hanna Marie ZENKE. Anna married August F. ZECHEL. **** "Mary Wegner R??del" (standing 5th from left): I believe this is Anna's sister Marie (who went by Mary) WEGNER, who was born June 25 1868, the oldest child (except for "Bertha #1" who died on shipboard during emigration in 1867) of Carl F.W. WEGNER and Frederiche BULGERIN. Mary married George RAITHEL, and died at age 37, leaving two young daughters, Hattie and Ruth. **** "Mr & Mrs Henzel" (standing 3rd and 4th from right): Don't know who they are. **** This would likely make the person standing 2nd from the right the one the name list gave as "One man unknown"). **** "Bertha Groeler Wittlief" (standing on right): Bertha GROEHLER born 1863 in Germany the oldest child of August GROEHLER and his apparent first wife. August GROEHLER later married in Wisconsin Bertha C. H. WEGNER, born 1848 the daughter of Wilhelm WEGNER and Wilhelm's second wife Caroline ROMIG. August GROEHLER was a brother to Caroline GROEHLER, who married August MOEDE. Caroline and August were of course the parents of the Amelia, Mary, and Gustav MODE's mentioned earlier (You follow the strands of tangled yarn). Bertha GROEHLER, born 1863, married Nov 8, 1894 August WITTLIEF (born 1859). **** "Clara Wegner, Carl's daughter" (sitting on floor in front of table): As mentioned before, this is likely the baby's sister. Her sitting front and center might suggest it is "her day" being celebrated (birthday? confirmation??). Based on the apparent ages of the people in the photo, the above seating may have Gustav Mode and his wife mixed up with Mr. and Mrs. Henzel. Gustav and his wife look too old.

Bertha Paulina LENZ

Info that Fred Lenz and Maria Albrecht are Bertha Pauline Lenz's parents came from Ref. 312 (marriage record). Was married in home of her brother Lenz in Windsor. Witnesses were William Lenz and Frederick Lenz.

Do not know the relationship of Bertha to the Lenz's of <262>. Her birthdate is about right to be a sister, but the indicated parents are not the same.

Ref 312 says she was received into Moravian church on June 26, 1881, and that record said she was born Jan 15, 1863 in Steinberg, Pomerania.

In the baptism of her daughter, Auguste Maria Wilhelmina, her name as mother is given as Louise Lenz, not Bertha Pauline.

Also see notes and sources for her husband Carl Wegner.

Auguste Maria Wilhelmine WEGNER

Ref 312 gives baptism record, from Mamre Moravian Church records, parents Karl Wegner and Bertha Lenz, baptised in family home by W.A.Cope, sponsors were Ferdinand Joek, Maria Lenz, and Auguste Schmidt.

Clara WEGNER

Clara's identity is based on the Moede/Wegner/Henzel family group photo given in Ref 318. Do not know if this is the same person, but Ref 364 lists a Clara Christina Wegener born Jan 23, 1882, died Aug 1, 1937, husband GRUEL (St Marks Luth church, Watertown, Wisc).

WEGNER

He existance is based on the Moede/Wegner/Henzel family group photo given in Ref 318.

SCHEMMEL

Also see notes and sources for his wife's second husband, Albert E. F. Wegner.

Albertina or Mittena Albertina AUGUSTINE

See notes and sources for her second husband, Albert Wegner . Ref 310 claims that Albertina Augustine and Schemmel had William and Harry and Ann, plus other children, at least one of whom was a daughter. I assume the additional children does not refer to children of her second marriage. Dorothy Wegner Lidvig, in Ref 310, says, "I have pictures of these ladies [I assume she is refering to Ann and her unnamed sister] who lived in Rockford, Illinois, but I don't know their married names. Ann had a daughter named Pearl and the family was wealthy enough to have a chauffeur in the early 1900's."

The obit of an Ida Schemmel in Ref 400 indicates Albertina Augustine and husband Schemmel also had Ida and Matilda, neither apparently married, and that "Anna" married a Freeman. Also see obit for another child Ottlie Schemmel Zeugner

Ida SCHEMMEL

Ref 310 claims that Albertina Augustine and Schemmel had William and Harry and Ann, plus other children, at least one of whom was a daughter. I assume the additional children does not refer to children of her second marriage. The obit of an Ida Schemmel in Ref 400 indicates Albertina Augustine and husband Schemmel also had Ida and Matilda, neither apparently married, and that "Anna" married a Freeman. Ida was a photographer.

Matilda SCHEMMEL

The obit of an Ida Schemmel in Ref 400 indicates Albertina Augustine and husband Schemmel also had Ida and Matilda, neither apparently married, and that "Anna" married a Freeman, among other children.

Friedrick AUGUSTINE

See notes and sources for his son-in-law Albert E. F. Wegner.

Carl Frederich or Fred WEGNER

Carl married Bertha Marie Bass in about 1898. They resided in Janesville Township, Rock County, Wisconsin in 1915. Carl was for a time at some type of asylum (Mendota?), but he did not die there. Both he and Bertha were buried at Milton cemetery in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Bertha emmigrated from Germany to the USA when she was six years old. Her father was a shoemaker in Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin and her mother was said to "believe in ghosts".
