Notes

Faith Marie WEGNER

There is some question as to the date of their marriage. She lived in Ft. Atkinson Wisconsin in 1999.

Mark Michael WEGNER

Lived in Kensington California in 1999.

Louis C. ERDMAN

See notes and sources for his wife Hattie Raithel. Louis was survived by a sister Mrs. William Schilling, Sullivan Wisconsin.

Hattie RAITHEL

Do not know birth order of Hattie and sister Ruth. Hattie and Ruth were suppose to wait till they were 21 years old to get the small inheritance left by their dad, but one of the girls got money early to go to school to become a teacher. Otto Henry Sievert <34> was their guardian, I think only with respect to the money.

Ref 393 gives the obituary of her husband, which gives their surviving children as William, Arthur, Mrs Marvin Hauser, Mrs. Gim Wong, and Mrs. Thomas Bostwick.

WRIGHT

He was killed in WWI. As a point of date reference, the United States entered WWI in 1917. Also see notes and sources for his wife Ruth Raithel.

Ruth RAITHEL

Do not know birth order of Hattie and sister Ruth. Hattie and Ruth were suppose to wait till they were 21 years old to get the small inheritance left by their dad, but one of the girls got money early to go to school to become a teacher. Otto Henry Sievert <34> was their guardian, I think only with respect to the money. Also see note on her first husband, Mr. Wright, who was killed in WWI..

Henry KETTKE

See notes and sources for his wife Ruth Raithel. His obit says he was survived by two sons, Harold (from his wife's first marriage??) of Johnson Creek, Wisconsin, Claude, Jefferson, two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Norma) Free, Jefferson, and Mrs. Helen Overdahl, Johnson Creek, and a sister Mrs. Oscar Mumm, Fort Atkinson, 16 gc, and 14 ggc. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Frederick LENZ

Not sure where this info (that Fred Lenz and Maria Albrecht) are Bertha Pauline Lenz's parents) came from.

Johann ROMIG

Do not know birth order of all of Johann's siblings. As is noted in the obituaries below, Johann was born in Germany in 1838, married Albertina Bulgerin (Bulgrien? Bulgrin?) in 1867, and they emigrated to Watertown, Wisconsin the next year. It is interesting to note that the marriage of Johnann's sister Emelia's son Emil to John's daughter Helena was the marriage of first cousins. It was however the second marriage for both, and Emelia was in her 60's at the time. John lived in Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin for 49 years, 33 of them with Helena. Both he and Albertina were buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Ft. Atkinson. She died nine years before him. He was survived by 6 gc and 10 ggc. Carl F. W. Wegner's <6> wife Fredrica was a sister to Albertina.

John's 1933 Obit, in its entirety [comments in brackets are mine]: "John Romig, 95, one of Fort Atkinson's oldest residents, died Saturday at 11:30 pm at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emil Lenz [Emil Lenz was his daughter Helena's second, late-life, husband], 112 Edwards Street. His death followed an illness of only a few days. Mr. Romig was born in Germany Sep. 2, 1838, and came to the United States in 1868, settling near Watertown. He was married in 1867 to Marie Bulgrin who preceded him in death. He had lived in and near Fort Atkinson for 49 years and had lived for 33 of them at the home of his daughter. Surviving are his daughter; two sons, Henry and William Romig, both of Fort Atkinson; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Kowalsky, Fort Atkinson; six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 1:30 pm at the home and at two o'clock in St. Paul's Lutheran church with the Rev. Palmer Janke officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Albertine's 1924 Obit, in its entirety: "The death of Mrs. John Romig, one of Fort Atkinson's oldest residents occurred at the family home on early Sunday morning October 11th. Death came peacefully and after only a brief illness to Mrs. Romig. She had attended the funeral of a friend at Friedens church on Saturday afternoon and it was while here that she became ill. She was taken home and later her conditrion was noticeably worse. Within a few hours she passed peacefully to the beyond. The death of Mrs. Romig marks the termination of a long life of usefulness in this community. Albetina Bulgrien originated of that early stock which aided so materially in the up-building of this section. She came to America from Germany as a young woman and with her husband settled at Watertown, Wisconsin. Here the family resided until they removed to a farm in this locality. For the past forty years, Mr. and Mrs. Romig have resided in Fort Atkinson and vicinity, honored and respected by all who know them. For a number of years Mrs. Romig had resided with her daughter, Mrs. Helen Heinz [Heinz was Helen's first husband], on Edwards St. and it was here that death came to her. She and her aged husband were privileged to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary on Oct. 1st last. Deceased was born January 27, 1842, and in 1867 was married to John Romig, the husband who survives at the age of 86 years [the 58th wedding anniversery comment would indicate they were married in 1866, not 1867]. Three children survive: Henry Romig, Mrs. Helen Heinz, and William Romig, also six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The funeral services were held on Tursday from St. Paul's Lutheran church, Rev. A. F. Nicolaus in charge with interment in Evergreen Cemetery." Ref. 364 lists her name as Augustina.

Albertine Marie BULGERIN

See notes and sources for her husband, John Romig, including her obituary.

Martha Marie ROMIG

Baptised at Mamre Moravian Church with Wihelmine Romig, Friedrich Romig and Henriette Ziebell as sponsors. Died of a throat infection, Ref 312 says on June 15, 1880 at the age of 5 years 19 days, Larry Jaeger's printout says she died on Aug 18, 1880. None of these dates/ages quite jive with one another.

Clara Albertine Wilhelmine ROMIG

Ref 312 says she was born March 8, 1885 and baptised March 29, 1884 (one of these years is wrong. I entered 1885 for both). In any case, she was baptised in the family home by Pastor W.A.Cope, with Gustof Huebner, Laura Cope, and Eliza Smith as sponsors. Ref 364 lists a Clara Auguste Moede born March 7, 1887, died Sep 1,1898. This is POSSIBLY the same person.

Wilhelm ROMIG

It would be very interesting and perhaps genealogically useful to know the connection between this family and our Caroline ROMIG WEGNER. This Wilhelm ROMIG and Caroline COULD be siblings. It should also be noted that this Romig family is the same one listed in Die Pommereschen Leute, Vol 9/7, Item 817, submitted by Joyce M. Pofahl, 2800 Roosevelt Road, Kenosha WI, 53143, tel 414-657-3783 (business), 262-843-3487 (home phone). Also see my extract of DPL data (page 6, Entry F of my "DPL Extracted Data" file).

Henry Romich (34 in the 1850 census), Koskonong Twnshp, Jefferson County, Wisconsin, born in Ohio, wife Charlotte who was 32 in 1850, may be a possible brother to Wilhelm and/or our Caroline.

Another Romig, put here just to keep from getting lost (from the Schivelbein Data folder): Charlotte Romig and Johann Junge (J might be a Z) had a daughter Emilie Auguste who in 1875 married at the age of 25 to Herman Carl David Schmeling. Therefore, Charlotte born estimated 1825.

Ref 255 lists a possibly related Romich family from Bulgrin that emigrated to the southern Brasilian state of Santa Catherina on the ship Electric from Hamburg (departing April 10, 1869), arriving (Joinville, Brazil?) on May 31, 1859 (69?): Herrmann (30 years old), wife Albertine, 32, son Bernard, 6, daughter Bertha, 5, and son Albert (1/2 year old).

Please note that at least four of Wilhelm Romig's and Marie Maas's children were born in Prütznow, Kreis Regenwalde, and that the Maas that married one of the two Wegner brothers that emigrated to Brazil in 1869 was also from Prütznow!

Marie MAAS

I wonder if Maasz (which is how I originally had it entered) could be the same family name as Maas, sometimes also spelled Maass. Yes, it likely is, because I am now aware that the German "double s" letter symbol is sometimes "Anglocized" as "sz" as well as "ss".

Please note that at least four of Wilhelm Romig's and Marie Maas's children were born in Prütznow, Kreis Regenwalde, and that the Maas that married one of the two Wegner brothers that emigrated to Brazil in 1869 was also from Prütznow!

It is not obvious where this info fits, but just to keep it from getting lost, I enter it here: I received a copy of a Prussian Riese Passe (Passport) from a Judy Gotter, W377 S5780 Hwy CI, Dousman, Wisconsin, 53118. She has the original, which she apparently obtained when doing research in Sheboygan County Wisconsin, so she assumes they came to that area. She does not have a connection to this family, but is trying to give it to someone that does. I don't see a connection to mine either but will add it here, and in other notes, to keep it from getting lost. Results of a partial translation (paraphrased): For passage from Hamburg to North America. The primary person is Johann Maass (Maaß), occupation Stellmacher (?) or Stelmacher(?), born Regenwalde, residence Maldewin (few miles south of Regenwalde), born Sept 1, 1806. The following were apparently his children: Wilhelm born Sept 26, 1841, August born Oct 29, 1843, Gottlieb born Dec 28, 1845, Florin (sp??) Chriten (sp??) born Aug 22, 1848 (last digit of year is not clear -- could be a 9), Friedrich born Oct 1, 1850, Albert born June 29, 1853, and Bertha also born June 29, 1853. Passport was dated March 15th, 1855, Stettin, on the front and on the second page " Labes on the 15th March 1855," and also, "......the Stelmacher Maß ..?.. from here, ..?.. Hamburg to North America ......................... Maldewin, the 9th April 1855, Kroning Schutz". On the second page is three columns describing three people: 1. "The ..?.. ..?.. Stellmacher Maaß Johanne born Carow, born Stargard, residence Maldewin, born Mov 4, 1813 ............" [Johann's wife?]; 2. Carl Heinrich Wilhelm Maaß, born Gross Borckenhagen (west of Labes), residence Maldewin, born Oct 21, 1835; and 3. Wilhelmine Maaß, born Borckenhagen, residence Maldewin, born March 9, 1837 [2. and 3. may be adult children of Johann, born 1806].

Johann G. HEINZ

See notes and sources for his wife Helena Romig.

Helena Auguste ROMIG

Baptised in Mamre Moravian church with Auguste Schmidt, Caroline Wodke, and August Romig as sponsors.

Helena Romig married a Mr. Heinz in about 1889, and then married Emil Lenz (also his second marriage) in 1933. There could have been more children from her first marriage, but Esther Heinz, Mrs. John Splies, and George Heinz are the ones surviving Helena's second husband <64> when he died in 1951. Also see notes and sources for Emil Lenz. Emil Lenz's mother Emilia and Helena Romig's father John were sister and brother, making Emil and Helena first cousins. Note however they, Helena was in her 60's, therefore beyond child-bearing age, at that time. Reference 364 list a husband of hers as POLZIN. Not sure if this is a third husband, or an error.

Ref 385 says she was confirmed in St. Paul's Evan. Luth church, Ft. Atkinson, class of 1890 and was still a member in 1961.

Emil LENZ

Emil married Ann Klockow in 1900 and Helena Romig in 1933, ten years after Anna died. Emil was a farmer. He died after a 6 year illness and is buried at Union Cemetery in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Also see notes and sources for his second wife. Emil Lenz's mother Emilia and Helena Romig's father John were sister and brother, making Emil and Helena first cousins. Note however they, Helena was in her 60's, therefore beyond child-bearing age, at that time.
