History of Early Pioneer Families of Hood River, Oregon. Compiled by Mrs. D.M. Coon
A.H. TIEMAN D.M.C. l864
Andrew H. Tieman was born in Denmark, coming to the United
States early in life. He joined the naval service and was a member of the
crew on the ship in which Commodore Perry made his famous voyage to Japan
in 1854. Later he came to the Northwest and as master of one of the river
steamers came to the Middle Columbia.
In 1864 he and S.M. Baldwin formed a partnership for
the purpose of raising stock, locating on land in the upper part of Hood
River valley. They were very successful in their efforts and soon acquired
valuable property with many home comforts and even luxuries. The roads in
those days were little better than trails yet parties of Hood River settlers
from the lower valley would go to the Baldwin and Tieman Ranch in summer
time, remaining several days, enjoying the wild mountain grandeur and the
hospitality of the ranchers. It is needless to say that both the "Bachelor
Ranchers" were welcome guests in the hones of those who lived in the lower
valley.
Mr. Tieman was a zealous member of the Masonic Order
and at his death left his property to the Hood River Lodge.
The Masonic building in the town of Hood River, on Second
Street, was erected with the funds thus provided and was named Tieman Hall
in memory of the giver.
