BINGEN, WHITE SALMON STUDY CONSOLIDATION
The feasibility of the consolidation of the towns of
White Salmon and Bingen is currently being studied.
Bruce Waldo, planning intern, is currently preparing
as the first step a proposal which examines two phases -- political and
departmental -- of the economic considerations of consolidation. Departmental
aspects include the public services and personnel. The two police departments
have already, in fact, been consolidated. Public sentiment concerning the
proposal is also now being surveyed. The final effect of the project, if
it proceeds, will be the establishing of the transitional community counsel.
A rather parallel study of the Bingen-on-the-Columbia
River theme for the towns is already presently underway. Clark College students
have made preliminary sketches proposing store fronts which could be constructed
to carry out the theme. Bingen in Western Klickitat county is named for
Bingen-on-the-Rhine in Germany.
With regard to the theme idea, application has been made
for a state grant to study the economics of the proposed project.
The proposed name of Bingen-on-the-Columbia (or -Rhine)
has not met with entire favor, it has been reported.
The White Salmon City Council set an open public meeting
for Wednesday, July 25, to discuss a German theme for the communities. The
session was to have been chaired by Dale Stone, planner and architect for
Murray-McCormick, Portland.
