The Klickitat County Agriculturist, Goldendale, WA., March 1, 1913, page 2

'COOK COUNTY' IS KILLED; KLICKITAT STAYS UNDIVIDED

The White Salmon Enterprise feels uncomfortable over the defeat of the county division bells. There are a few editorials from the current issue. They are amusing to us of the central and east end:
With the high taxes of western Klickitat still to come to the county seat coffers, Goldendale is feeling like a Fourth of July celebration. It was a narrow escape from going to the poor house.
Brooks was the second man to assure J.D. Taylor his support for the speakershop, and it gave him a good standing with the Republicans, for anyone who could gr____ely give up his party preference and go over to the "enemy" was worth considering. Brooks is smooth, a good wool gatherer, and was not caught asleep at the switch on the matter of county division. Nor was he asleep on the bill to give depositors some measure of protection in the matter of private banks, for Brooks has a private bank of is known.
The Goldendale Agriculturist gave out that county division, if passed, would be vetoed by the Governor. It is hardly possible that the governor has become a member of the Goldendale ring and assures them as to his policy on bills. It would be interesting to know what the Governor thinks of being forecasted in this way. Certain of the Goldendale Easterners on west end progress have got into that state of mind where they could readily conceive an angel of providence interfering in their behalf in rolling up and carrying away the boundary line should the "naughty, rebellious, sinfully ambitious, don't-know-what's-good-for-them Amalekites" have succeeded in getting it laid down.
Brooks' tears of county division calamity in case of division would make the angels weep, but his heart bleedeth not for the poor, distressed one whose property he helped to mortgage to bondholders for Goldendale improvements.
It took Hood River county eight years to get onto the map.
The boys at Olympia, Hays, Tate, McClintock, Van Vorst, Coates, Colburn, Spencer, worked hard and with good judgment. Much credit is due them as well as Lieutenant Governor Hart and Senator Chappell.
If the initiative referendum is framed favorably the next move will probably be to submit the division proposition to the state, the method by which Hood River finally won.
County division it is not knocked out-it can "come back."
Five weary Willies were seen in the vicinity of Chehalis going southward on Tuesday. No, they were not the White Salmon bunch homeward bound.
The Olympia lobby for county division returned Tuesday night, much disappointed, but satisfied they had done everything to win.
