COUNTY DIVISION BILL IS DEFEATED
Good Old Klickitat Will Not Be Divided This Year
Word was received from Hon. N.B. Brooks on last Monday
that by a decisive votes the House of Representatives defeated the bill to
have a new county formed from the western part of Klickitat county.
The bill was voted on it and carried by the senate through
the hard work of the state senator John E. Chappell: but through the hard
and efficient work of the Representative Brooks it was defeated when it came
to a vote in the house.
We are glad to see this bill defeated, for we believe
that the time is not ripe to have our county divided, -- and when the time
does come to divide the county, we believe that the line should be on the
Big Klickitat river, and not close to Centerville. In fact the people of
western Klickitat are asking too much.
Abe Ahola and H.J. Clark were over at the state capital
last week and did good work in helping defeat the bill.
The Seattle Times has the following:
The Senate bill for the division of Klickitat county
and creating the county of White Salmon was indefinitely postponed by the
House by a vote of 51 to 42. The bill came up on two reports of the committee
on counties and county boundaries. The minority of the committee recommended
passage of the measure and the majority favored indefinite postponement.
The vote was the same on each roll call.
Brooks, of Klickitat, talked for nearly half an hour
and his speech kept the house in almost constant laughter. He was only serious
a minor part of the time, but it was plainly evident from the applause that
he had won his fight.
In concluding Brooks referred to his county as a "the
land of sunshine, where even the car wheels sing it Klick-i-tat, Klick-i-tat,
as they glide over the rails."
