CO. DIVISION WINS SENATE
One Lone Senator Gives Adverse Vote to Co. Division
The bill creating Cook county out of the western part
of Klickitat county has passed the Senate, 38 to 1. It is now up to the house,
and the overwhelming sentiment in the senate favoring the bill should have
a strong influence on the house. Of course Mr. Brooks may endeavor to strong-arm
it in committee and the out-come is awaited with interest. The bill as passed
made no change in the original boundary line between ranges of 13 and 14.
A press dispatch says, "It was the original intention
to name the new county White Salmon, but a change was asked by some of those
who live in the new county to be." The Journal's report was that Senator
Chappell introduced the bill for White Salmon county, but on petition for
a change in name had it done. The press dispatch in the Journal reports that
prospects are bright for the creation of the new county.
No letter has been received in White Salmon as to the
change in the name, but we presume there was a good reason for it. The Enterprise
likes the name of Cook, as White Salmon was too long a repetition. The new
name is in honor of Capt. H.C. Cook, the first fruit grower in the district
and the government superintendent in the building of the Cascade Locks.
