History of Early Pioneer Families of Hood River, Oregon. Compiled by Mrs. D.M. Coon
CLAUDE E. MARKHAM
Claude E. Markham was born in Dane County, Wisconsin,
September 28, 1866. He was the son of John W. and Agnes (Blount)
Markham.
The family lived near Madison until 1878 when they moved
to Kansas. Claude completed the grade and high school course in the public
school and then took a course in the Lawrence Business College. For three
years he worked in an insurance office. His father died in 1889 and in 1890
Claude went to Puget Sound and from there to Hood River where he purchased
80 acres of land in 1891.
On July 28, 1891 he married Miss Mattie A. Morton at
The Dalles. She was a native of Sparta, Illinois, and a teacher in Kansas
and Illinois before her marriage.
Mr. Markham followed diversified farming on his land
although he also raised strawberries. He raised good crops and was active
and energetic in marketing his products and often assisted in the work of
the Strawberry Union.
Three children, Wesley, Agnes and Edward were born while
the family lived in Hood River Valley. They moved to California.
