FALLBRIDGE NAME IRKS
Historical Society To Ask Change To Wishram
Return to Indian Nomenclature Urged for Early Center of Sun Worshipers
The Oregon Historical society, at its annual meeting yesterday, decided to ask
postal authorities to change the name of Fallbridge, on the Columbia river near
The Dalles, back to Wishram, the name bestowed by the Indians and in use in the
days of Lewis and Clarke.
Fallbridge, or Wishram, as it was known in early years,
was the center at one time of sun worshipers’ activities, for picture writings
denoting that type of worship have been found there on the cliffs rising steeply
from the river. To that spot the University of California sent an expedition
last year to excavate for relics of Indian days. The change of name was asked
in a resolution adopted by the association.
Officers were re-elected as follows: Frederick V.
Holman, president; C.B. Moores, vice-president; Professor F. G. Young, of the
University of Oregon, secretary, and Leslie M. Scott, treasurer. The two
directors whose terms expired this year, Judge Charles H. Carey and B. B.
Beekman, were also re-elected.
