FIRES TAKE TOLL IN AREA OVER PAST WEEK END
Sunday Blaze Destroys Underwood
Wednesday Morning Fire Burns Old House At Ray Moore Place

Starting at about noon Sunday from a few sparks on the roof of the George E. Balsiger store at Underwood, flames fanned by high velocity winds soon leveled the store containing the postoffice, the Underwood service station and tavern across the roadway, the Heinie Kapp market and store, the Underwood hotel, three residences and six Indian dwellings.
The blaze was first sighted as flames broke out on the roof and the White Salmon Fire Department was called for.  Upon arriving on the scene they immediately called for help from the Bingen and Hood River departments.  All responded, but due to the high winds and difficulties experienced in getting to water supplies, they were unable to stop the spread of the blaze to the east.  However an old fruit warehouse west of the store building was saved by keeping water on it.
The wind spread the flames up the hill to the north of the town and across the White Salmon onto the hillside north of the Eirie.
Lost in the blaze besides the buildings mentioned was several thousand dollars worth of merchandise and household items which owners were unable to save.

Moore House Burns

On Wednesday morning the White Salmon department was called to the Ray Moore place on Underwood hill when their old residence, occupied by Mexican workers, caught fire.  Efforts to save the building were fruitless but the department and Mr. Moore with his orchard spraying machine were able to keep the fire from spreading to their new house.
Mr. Moore lost considerable bedding and equipment that he had stored in the building in preparation for the coming fruit season.

Blaze Cuts Power Pole

At about 11:30 Wednesday morning the Bingen Fire Department was called out to distinguish a blaze that had cut a pole in the high power just east of the Templeton mill sawdust burning site.  High winds had carried burning embers against the pole and burned it off before being detected.
A crew came immediately from Hood River to repair the damage.
