GRAND DALLES IRRIGATION PLAN
A project for irrigation of 5000 acres of land back of Granddalles, in Klickitat
county and adjacent to The Dalles, by means of water conveyed by a ditch from
the Big Klickitat river, 18 miles distant, is being backed by a number of local
businessmen, it became known at The Dalles today. L.A. Duncan of that city
conceived the plan when he learned that power rights on the Klickitat, which
long had tied up water for irrigation, had expired. He had once filed on water
rights which have been approved by the state of Washington.
The formation of an irrigation district, which would be
bonded to provide money for the development, is contemplated. Engineers have
been over the project, and estimate that water can be put on the ground at a
maximum of $75 or an acre. In view of the assurance by directors of The Dalles
Oregon-Washington Bridge company that the steel bridge across the Columbia at
that point is almost certain to be built, the project would be of great
importance to The Dalles and Klickitat county should it be successful, it has
been pointed out.
