History of Early Pioneer Families of Hood River, Oregon. Compiled by Mrs. D.M. Coon
GEORGE T. PRATHER AND FAMILY 1879
George Prather, a native of Kansas, was born May 20,
1857. He arrived in Hood River December 16, 1879. Mrs. Prather was born in
Athens, Ohio, July 28, 1865, and arrived in Hood River November 3, 1881.
They were married in Hood River.
Mr. Prather was a carpenter and did considerable building
in his younger days, but did not confine himself to one line of work.
He served as School clerk, was postmaster for several
years and handled fruit. In 1889 he started the Hood River Glacier and when
he had demonstrated that there was a call for a newspaper, turned it over
to John Cradlebaugh who carried it through the perils of infancy.
Mr. and Mrs. Prather are pioneers who take a deep interest
in the organization, serving on committees and doing other necessary work
and are always present at the annual meetings.
Five children have been born to them; Martha died in
infancy, Bertha, Grace, Georgia and Lulu have grown to womanhood and passed
through the grade and high school in Hood River. Georgia graduated at the
Oregon State University and is a teacher in Idaho.
Bertha, Grace and Lulu are married and have homes and
work to occupy their time and energies.
Mr. Prather sold their town residence and bought the
Davis Divers' place at the summit where they lived a number of years.
Their present home is near the Valley Christian Church.
In 1884 a Good Templar's Lodge was organized in Hood River and Mr. and Mrs.
Prather were members.
That organization has become obsolete but Mrs. Prather
is active in the work of the W.C.T.U. and in the W.R.C. Mr. Prather is a
member of the K. of P.
