History of Early Pioneer Families of Hood River, Oregon. Compiled by Mrs. D.M. Coon
MRS. HARRIET HALD AND FAMILY
Oregon Pioneer of 1847 -- Hood River Pioneer of 1894.
From Hood River Glacier, February, 1918:
Friends, neighbors and relatives paid their last sad
respects Friday afternoon to another of Oregon's pioneers, Mrs. Harriet Hald,
native of Illinois, who with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Hall, crossed
the plains by ox cart in 1847, settling at Oregon City.
Mrs. Hald was then sixteen years old. In 1850 she was
married to Henry C. Hald, a well known pioneer figure and veteran of early
Indian Wars. Mrs. Hald and her husband came to Hood River in 1894. The latter
died thirteen years ago.
Six daughters survive the pioneer. They are: Mrs. W.S.
Hull, with whom she has been residing, and Mrs. Zora Dimmick of Hood River.
Mrs. Harriet G. McCoy of Bellevue, Idaho, Mrs. Emma Tate of Baker, Mrs. Helen
Edmondson of The Dalles, and Mrs. Nottie Hamilton of Odessa,
Washington.
Thirty seven grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren
survive this remarkable woman.
Funeral services were conducted at the home Friday afternoon,
Rev. W.G. Eliot, pastor of the First Unitarian Church of Portland, a life
long friend of the family, officiating. Interment followed at the Idlewilde
cemetery. S.E. Bartmess directed the funeral.
In 1851 Mr. and Mrs. Hald removed to Roseburg, where
they settled on an Indian claim. They resided there until 1855 when they
removed to The Dalles. In 1867 they removed to Mitchell, Crook County, thence
in 1883 to Drewsey, Malheur County, where they resided until 1888, when they
removed to Roseburg.
From Roseburg they removed in 1891, to Bay City, where
they resided until they came to Hood River.
