HISTORICAL WISHRAM TALES SCRIBED IN BOOK

The Columbia River rapids at the "Long Narrows" are gone, the old Wishom village sites inundated. Now the river seems tame, serene. Except for the racket of laboring diesel locomotives plus the distant din of freeway traffic, a sullen silence fills the vast river canyons. The inhospitable landscape is empty now of human life and activity-unlike 150 years ago.
The only complete volume of Wishom (Wishram) lore in print -- Where the River Roared, The Wishom Tales, a remarkable new volume by Donald M. Hines. This volume recalls the oral tales and life of the Wishom Indians who dwelt formerly on the Washington side of the Columbia River, a few miles upriver from The Dalles, but now reside on the Yakama Reservation.
These Wishom tales were painstakingly collected by three individuals. First, in 1905 anthropologist Edward Sapir visited the Yakama Reservation, and for five weeks collected a rich lore of data about the Wishoms including many oral narratives. Second, beginning in 1909 Yakima pioneer Lucullus V. McWhorter befriended numerous Wishoms, and collected many oral tales over the next several decades. Finally, in 1924/1925 anthropologist Leslie Spier visited the Yakama Reservation, collected additional oral narratives. All known collected oral texts Have been included here with textual accuracy of first concern to us. To provide a sense of context with the place where the Wishoms originally lived and worked, spectacular photos of their - original Columbia River locale are included.
The author, Donald M. Hines, earned the Ph.D in Folklore and American Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. He has previously published seven volumes and numerous articles devoted to Indian lore from Central Washington and Oregon, Northern Idaho.
