HENRY PRIGGE AND FAMILY 1880
Henry Prigge was born in Germany January 28, 1850 and
received a liberal education in his home country. He came to the United States
in 1872 locating at Winona, Minnesota. In 1874 he went to San Francisco where
he followed various employment.
On March 12, 1880, he was married to Miss Wilhelmine
Hillman. She was a native of Germany and the daughter of Carl A. and Laura
(Petculd) Hillman.
Mr. and Mrs. Prigge came to Oregon in 1880 and settled
on a homestead of one hundred and sixty acres in Hood River Valley. The soil
was good and under his management became one of the most productive places
in the valley. He was an advocate of good schools and good roads and labored
earnestly along these lines. He served as school director and also as road
supervisor at various times and his work has been highly
recommended.
Mr. and Mrs. Prigge were members of the Lutheran Church
and he was also a member of the A.O.U.W. They were the parents of six children:
Herman, Louis, Freda, Emma, Annie and Laura. These children were pupils at
the Oak Grove school and have grown to maturity in Hood River valley where
they have many friends.
Mr. Prigge died while the children were still young,
and Mrs. Prigge has bravely and wisely borne her double responsibility as
guardian and provider for the family.
