HUSUM

Road Supervisor Johnson with a crew of men is improving the county road between this point and Trout Lake.  Over $2,000 will be expended in clearing the right of way and placing the road in shape for heavy traffic and a thorough fare for automobiles.
William Coate of Trout Lake, who has been advocated by local papers and republicans throughout Klickitat county as a candidate for state senator, desires to state that he is not in the race for that honor.  Mr. Coate has served this county two terms as representative and two terms as county commissioner, and is one of the leading stockmen of western Klickitat county.
Martin Thompson, founder of Husum and a part owner of the present townsite, while here recently on a visit from his home near Albany, Oregon, related his experience while conducting a gristmill in the early days at that point.  When he completed the mail in the early ‘80s wheat was carried over the mountain on pack animals to be ground.  When the first fair was held at Goldendale Mr. Thompson walked over to that town meeting a packhorse loaded with flour for exhibit.  He had to compete with the mills at Walla Walla, The Dalles and Goldendale, but captured first place in exhibiting the best quality of flour.
