SENATE APPROVES JOHN DAY FUNDS
Last Friday the senate appropriations committee approved
addition of $1,000,000 to the president's budget to begin construction of
John Day Dam.
The vote was a victory for northwest legislators, who
had been pressing for a 1958 start on the project. The senate action must
go before a senate house conference committee along with other senate additions
to the appropriations bill passed by the house.
No funds were included in the president's budget proposal
for John Day Dam, and the house committee declined to insert funds for the
project. Northwest salons in Washington, D.C. wanted $8,000,000 for starting
the dam construction.
