'SITUATION OK' REPORTED AS JOHN DAY BEGINS OPERATION
River traffic on the Columbia was resumed after a shutdown
of several months when the Coast Guard Cutter Bluebelle passed through the
John Day Lock at 10 a.m. Sunday.
During the day, several commercial vessels and at least
one pleasure boat made uuse of the facility. Corps of Engineers personnel
said it worked perfectly.
Early rumors that the fish ladders were not working properly
apparently were groundless, for the Corps of Engineers reported that
approximately 700 salmon and steelhead were counted making the passage Saturday
and Sunday. Figures on passage since the week-end were not available but
the office of the resident engineer reported that since some slight adjustments
were made in the water flow, the ladder apparently have been working very
well. "No malfunctions have been obperved," said F.J. Hoag, assistant to
Mr. Williams.
Other reports of water leakage were described and to
be expected." One point on the SP&S Railway relocated track required
"some correction," the spokesman said, but was not a point of danger.
Water level of the pool reached elevation 257 early Sunday,
and has been held there since. The 257 mark is the normal low-level operating
point, and it is unlikely that it will advance higher until maximum stream
flow caused by spring runoff may advance it to the 265-foot maximum.
