SITE SELECTED FOR JOHN DAY DAM BY CORPS
Official approval has been given the river mile 215.6
location for the John Day dam, according to announcement made by Col. Myron
E. Page Jr., district engineer, Walla Walla. The site selection was confirmed
at a joint meeting in Portland last week attended by representatives of the
chief of engineers in Washington, the North Pacific division and the Walla
Walla district.
The decision will clear the way for early advertisement
for bids on access road construction work. Only phase of planning still pending
is that pertaining to the number of skeleton units to be included in detailed
designing of the structure.
Present dam design proposal was said to call for a dam
105 feet high, creating a reservoir 77 miles long, extending to the tailrace
of McNary dam. Power would be generated by 12 units of 108,700 kilowatts
each. Estimated cost of the dam is from $350,000,000 up, depending upon the
number of skeleton units to he installed.
