J.W. INGALLS AND FAMILY
1875
D.M.C. Historian
James Ingalls, the eldest child of Alfred and Emma Ingalls,
was born in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, November 10, 1867.
He came to Hood River with his parents; they were members
of the Parkhurst Colony which arrived November 10, 1875.
In 1878 the Barrett School was erected on land adjoining
their farm and James received most of his education at this school.
As a pupil he was painstaking and careful, more faithful
than brilliant, never shirked his work nor claimed more than his just dues.
He acted as janitor for a time and was most dependable.
In 1889 he was married to Gertrude Balch, sister of Rev.
Frederick Balch, the author of "Bridge of the Gods".
For a number of years Mr. Ingalls engaged in farming,
but later sold the farm and moved to town, engaging in the automobile business.
Four children have been given them: a daughter, who died in infancy. Raymond
Weston, a popular and promising young man, died at the age of eighteen years.
Harold is in the army and a younger son is still attending school.
Mr. and Mrs. Ingalls are members of the Congregational
Church. They have both been active in war work and she writes occasionally
for publication. They have a beautiful home on the Heights.
