KLICKITAT COUNTY COULD BE AN INDUSTRIAL COUNTY IN FUTURE
When the proposed dam at The Dalles becomes a concrete
fact, Klickitat County can well become an industrial as well as an agricultural
county.
To become an industrial area, a place must have abund-ant
power, cheap transportation, a good supply of labor and sufficient raw materials.
At The Dalles dam there will be abundant power, cheap tide-water transportation
and a good supply of labor (the mobility of labor being what it is now).
The tide-water transportation will offset any shortage of raw materials;
for raw materials can be brought at little cost from anywhere on the globe
by sea.
If industries settle near The Dalles, the north bank
of the river will be the logical place for them to settle. Ivan Bloch, industrial
consultant, stated in a guest editorial for The Oregon Journal: "The Dalles
dam will be the first down-river structure having substantial industrial
acreage within a close proximity of the dam's powerhouse, and a unique variety
of rail and transportation facilities. The savings which result from this
juxtaposition of advantages may facilitate the location of new industries,
important to the integration of Pacific Northwest's economy."
In other words all the advantages to be found in that
one spot may attract industries.
But that "may" is a word which carries a lot of "ifs."
If industry is to settle, it will come because it is attracted; and the job
of attracting it will be a promotional job.
That's something for which preparations should be made
now. The Dalles dam will be putting out full power in only eight years.
