The Klickitat County Agriculturist, Goldendale, WA., March 1, 1913, page 14
"Klickitat Intelligence"

The Klickitat county division bill, says the Toppenish Review editor, was lost in the house by a vote of the 51 to 41. In the senate it passed almost unanimously. The new county was to be called Cook county and it is reported from Olympia that the bill failed to pass the house because many of the legislatures thought it was named for Dr. Cook of the North Pole fame. This was an error on the part of the solons, but it all goes to show that there is more in a name than many people imagine. Incidentally the result would leave the Klickitat delegation in the legislature entirely satisfied. Senator Chappell, continues the Review man, went to Olympia for the express purpose of becoming chairman of the committee on counties in the senate in order that he might put a bill through to divide Klickitat county. Representative Brooks, his colleague, sought the chairmanship of the same committee in thehousefor the express purpose of defeating division. Each secured his chairmanship. Chappell got his bill through the senate and Brooks promptly killed it in the house. In other words, both men have redeemed their promises to their constituents and no one is hurt. There is a real statesmanship for you with the capital S.
