LEWIS E. MORSE AND FAMILY 1889
Mr. Morse came to Hood River in 1889 from Kansas. He
was born in Michigan August 5, 1858, and remained in that state until 1874
when he moved to Kansas.
His education was obtained in the public schools and
in business transactions.
On August 3, 1879 he was married to Miss Dora Markley.
Ten years later the family came west, locating in Rood River where Mr. Morse
took a timber claim and engaged in the livery business.
The following year Mrs. Morse died leaving, besides her
husband, a daughter Theresa and a son Charles. The children became pupils
in Hood River's public schools.
In 1891 Mr. Morse was appointed postmaster by President
Cleveland and contin-ued in that office four years, during that time his
daughter assisted in the duties of the office and became very proficient
in the work.
In 1893 Mr. Morse was married to Mrs. Frances McCoy at
Hood River.
In 1895 he moved to White Salmon and engaged in general
merchandising for two years when he sold out and returned to Hood River again
entering the livery business. Later he moved to the Willamette Valley but
is remembered by a host of friends in Hood River.
