McMAHON OPPOSES COUNTY DIVISION
J.R. McMahon, candidate on the Republican ticket for State Representative, stands unalterably opposed to County Division. This conclusion has been reached by him after an extensive tour throughout the entire West End of the County and an exhaustive inquiry for expressions of opinion from the residents of that section. It is a surprising fact as adduced by Mr. McMahon's investigations, that not more than one voter out of every twelve or fifteen in the county west of the Big Klickitat favors of the formation of a new county, with the consequent expense to its tax-payers. The section in and around White Salmon where the agitation of the scheme for division was begun is for the most part radically in favor of the move, but the sentiment in the outlying districts as reported to Mr. McMahon seems to be that White Salmon is the only section of the proposed new county that will be materially benefited by the change. His canvass has been from house to house, with a frank question for the voters' opinion on the matter, and his fairness is reported to be greatly appreciated. As a consequence of the somewhat unexpected degree of support he is promised in the West End, Mr. McMahon believed that his nomination is practically assured. Middle and Eastern Klickitat voters are expected to give him unconditional support, both because of his attitude regarding division and is recognized qualities for the office.
