History of Early Pioneer Families of Hood River, Oregon. Compiled by Mrs. D.M. Coon
MR. COWPERTHWAITE AND FAMILY 1858
Mr. Cowperthwaite secured land adjoining the farm of
A.C. Phelps on Phelps Creek. He spent the winter of 1858 with Mr. Phelps.
Prof. Newell, an old time music teacher and a relative
of the Coe family, often came to Hood River in the early days. He had two
daughters, Mary and Frances who usually accompanied him.
Frances Newell became Mrs. Cowperthwaite. She did not
live many years but left a frail little girl, named Julia, a name-sake of
Mrs. Phelps. Julia was raised and educated in Portland and became a teacher.
She taught school in Hood River, soon after the town was located. She is
now in the employ of the Post Office Department in Portland. Jr. Cowperthwaite
was living (1915) in Camas, Oregon. He was blind and feeble and past 90 years
of age.
Julia died about 35 or 36.
