History of Early Pioneer Families of Hood River, Oregon. Compiled by Mrs. D.M. Coon
MR. AND MRS. ARMSTRONG 1870
Trained and experienced teachers, they came to Hood River
from New York, some time previous to 1870.
They lived in what we know as the "Barrett District"
on the "Lily Place". She taught a very successful school in 1870 in the first
school house built in Hood River, which was located on the south west corner
of the Jenkins homestead. The building was too small to accommodate the pupils
and a log cabin belonging to Charles Stillwell was used for a time. An exhibition
was given at the close of school, as was the custom in those days, and the
patrons crowded the building to such an extent that a window was taken out
to enable the pupils to reach the platform.
Mr. Armstrong was elected school director in 1872, serving
for a term of three years. A few years later they returned to New York, much
to the sorrow of their neighbors and friends, especially the Barretts, who
were also from that state.
Their work in Hood River schools was appreciated.
