PUT NEW BOAT ON UNDERWOOD FERRY
The new launch, Beaver, of Underwood, built for Olsen & Treiber by Frank Smith
at Astoria, arrived at Underwood February 19th. Captain Olsen and the chief
engineer came in charge. The Beaver is 51 feet long, 11 feet 4 inch beam, draft
4 feet. She carries a 50-horsepower engine made by the Imperial Gas Engine Co.
and is fitted with electric lights, electric search light and a deep water
compass, and is controlled by compressed air in the pilot house. The Beaver is
built the strongest and heaviest of any craft ever constructed at Astoria, and
of the best material obtainable.
The upper deck is covered with canvas and arranged with
seats for fifty passengers. The cabin is entirely separate from the engine
room. It has hair-stuffed leather cushioned seats, linoleum carpet and electric
lights, and will comfortably accommodate twenty-five passengers.
The Beaver will be placed in commission March 1, 1911,
on the Hood River-Underwood Ferry and will be prepared to make excursions to any
part of the Columbia river from The Dalles to Astoria either day or night.
Captain Olsen, who has had a life experience on the
water and thirty years on the Columbia, will be in charge.
