NEW IRRIGATION SYSTEM AT HUSUM
For the first time since it was planted, the 52 acre orchard of J.E. Slade, at
Husum, will this spring be under a modern and complete irrigation system, and
will be the first orchard in that section to be under a permanent irrigation
system. Mr. Slade, with two others, has spent practically the entire winter in
rushing work on the system to have it in operation this spring and it is
expected that, when the dry weather calms, it will be easy to give the entire
orchard the proper amount of moisture.
The water is drawn from the White Salmon River by means
of a wing dam and flume. The dam is 400 feet long and the flume is over 500 feet
in length. With the aid of a 33 horsepower turbine engine and a 5 inch
centrifugal pump, 600 gallons of water can be pumped every minute to a height of
110 feet. Throughout the orchard there are 2850 feet of irrigation pipes,
sufficient to irrigate thoroughly the entire orchard of 52 acres. This
irrigation system will be watched with much interest by other ranchers of the
Husum section, for a supply of water for irrigation has long been a problem of
that section.
