TWO HIGHWAY WORKERS KILLED

Premature Explosion of Dynamite Near Lyle, Wash., Fatal
George Boyles, 45, of Portland, and Alvin Stump, 23,
of Lyle, were killed almost instantly about 2:30 P.M. Tuesday when a charge
of dynamite exploded prematurely four miles east of Lyle on the Evergreen
Highway. Boyles, who had gone to work on the state highway job only that
morning as a powder man, was tamping the charge into a hole at the time of
the blast.
Stump had been working on the project for four days.
He is survived by a widow and one child. Boyles is said to have a brother,
H.L. Boyles, living at 461 East Washington St., Portland.
The bodies were taken to the M.W. Chapman undertaking
establishment in Goldendale, pending word from relatives.
Angus Lindsay, of Stevenson was also injured by the explosion. His
shoulder was badly bruised and he also received a bad cut over one of his
eyes. He is at The Dalles hospital and reports say that he will get along
alright. He is a brother of Mrs. Orie Kreps of this city.

ARCHIE ERNEST STUMP
Archie Ernest Stump, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Stump,
old residents of Lyle, was born at Pleasant Valley, a little community about
ten miles east of Goldendale, August 7, 1909. From boyhood had been known
locally, having taken his schooling here and at one time had been an interested
attendant and participant in the activities of the Young Peoples' society
of the Lyle church.
Three years ago, Mr. Stump was united in marriage to
Viola Mildred Knight, also of Lyle, at Goldendale, March 28, 1928. A baby
boy came to bless their home while they were residents of Pasco, Wn. in 1929.
For several weeks immediately prior to Tuesdays fatal accident, they had
been staying at the home of the wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Knight, also
of Lyle.
While there, Mr. Stump had been engaged in road construction
work about five miles east of Lyle and it was while at this work last Tuesday
that a premature explosion of dynamite snuffed out his life. He had just
passed his 22nd birthday. He leaves to
mourn his going, his young wife and small son, Dale Archie, his mother and
father, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Stump and four sisters, Miss Emma and Miss Mildred
Stump and Mrs, Madeline White all residents in Lyle and Mrs. Hazel Nichols
of Klickitat.
Funeral services were held Thursday, August 20 in the
Lyle church with Rev. E.W. McAbee officiating. Interment was in the Lyle
cemetery.
For the bereaved dear ones who remember him as a loving
and devoted husband, and a genial friend, our sympathies are extended and
our prayers go forth to our Heavenly Father who promises to be father o the
fatherless and husband to the widow, will be their strong comfort and stay
in this hour.
