AUGUST FERDINAND WILKEN
August Ferdinand Wilken, well known resident of Bingen, died
at the Hood River hospital Tuesday morning at the age of 74 years, 5 months
and 2 days. He was born in Hanover, Germany, August 25, 1850, and came to
the United States in 1871. In 1878 he settled in Husum where he was one of
the first settlers, clearing a fine farm which he sold about 18 years ago
when he moved to Bingen. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. John Schmidt of
Bingen.
The funeral was held in the Bingen church yesterday at
2 o'clock when numerous friends paid their respects to the old pioneer.
The remains were taken to Glenwood where today they will
be laid to rest in the Grange cemetery beside those of his brother, Mathias.
Teunis Wyers, of this city, took the remains to Glenwood,
it being one of Mr. Wilken's last wishes that when he passed away Mr. Wyers
personally drive his remains to the Glenwood Cemetery.
