DROWNED IN KLICKITAT
Information was brought to this city last Friday of the
drowning of Albine Mattson, of Centerville, in the Big Klickitat River. It
seems that young Mattson accompanied by his wife, Eblert Mattson, Wm. Lawery
and Herman Matta, all of that city, were on a fishing excursion and according
to the report given by his companions he fell over an embankment near that
place. They heard him cry out several times, but could do nothing for him,
and so set out for Centerville to obtain help to locate the body. It is thought
by some that on account of the location in the river, that the body will
be found still in the Klickitat, although if it reaches the rapid current
a little further down, it will doubtless not be recovered for some time,
and then in the Columbia. At this writing the searching parties have failed
to locate the body. A party of men and his companions returned immediately
to the scene of the unfortunate disaster, but found nothing. The discovery
of the body will probably quell the several current reports regarding the
drowning.
Albine Mattson was born near Centerville, where he has
always lived. He was twenty-one years of age and the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Lars Mattson, of Centerville. He leaves to survive him, a young wife, father
and mother, and a number of brothers and sisters.

The sad news of the accidental drowning by death of Albine
Mattson came as a great shock to the people here. It is hard to see so many
young people passing away. We know not when we may be called away. In the
midst of Life we are in Death. The bereaved family and relatives have the
profound sympathy of the entire community.
Ms. Ida. Johnson of Portland arrived here on Saturday's
train to be with her sister, Mrs. Hilda Mattson, in her said trouble, whose
husband was drowned, as noted above.

ACCIDENTALY DROWNED
The sad intelligence reached this city of late last week
that Albene Mattson, of the Centerville section, had been accidentally drowned
in the Big Klickitat river, above the Rusk soda springs.
He and a party were out on a hunting and fishing trip
and at the time was enroute to their camp. While on the edge of a high bluff
overlooking the river he suddenly slipped and in a moment was dashed into
the icy-cold waters of the deep and swift running Klickitat.
One of his brothers, who was with him, but was a little
ways ahead, heard his cries for help, but it all happened so quickly he could
do nothing. He failed to rise, and although the most diligent search of the
river by scores of people has been made for a week, the body has not been
found. It is believed to be securely lodged among the fallen trees and brush
in the river.
The deceased was about 25 years of age, and was a son
of Mr. and Mrs. Lars Mattson of Centerville, and had been married for only
about a year.
Sheriff Warner and County Attorney C.W. Ramsey were out
at the place where the drowning took place Wednesday. They spent the entire
day looking into the matter, and state that as yet the body has not been
found. Careful search of the river is going on by a crew of men, and the
body should be discovered at any time now.
County Attorney Ramsey stated on his return that a rigid
coroner's inquest will be held when the body is found, as some circumstances
may require explanation.

BODY OF ALBINE MATTSON IS FOUND
Word was received by Coroner Merle W. Chapman, just as we go to press that parties have recovered the body of Albine Mattson who was drowned in the Big Klickitat several weeks ago. The body was found five miles from Lyle and was reported to the corner by Mack Wright. Mr. Chapman left this afternoon for the place where the body was recovered and will investigate in connection with County Attorney Ramsey. A number of stories have been told since the unfortunate affair occurred and the locating of the body will doubtless clear every tale. As the body has been in the water for some time, an examination may be extremely difficult. Parties have dragged river and dynamite has been used to locate the body, to no avail. A reward of one hundred dollars has been offered by the father of the young Mattson for the recovery of the body.

"Goldendale And Near-by Points"
Herman Matte, of Centerville, who was with Albine Mattsen when the latter was drowned in the Big Klickitat River two weeks ago, was Tuesday night arrested on a complaint of the Prosecuting Attorney alleging the sale of intoxicants to minors. Judge McKenney has fixed the bail at $1000.00 which Matte has as yet been unable to secure.
