BERTHA L. BABCOCK
Bertha L. Babcock, 79, died October 31, 1995 at her home
in Goldendale.
She was born on May 27, 1916 in Glenwood to Matterson
P. Gilmore and Anna C. (Wellenbrock) Gilmore.
She lived her early years on her parents ranches in Glenwood,
Crofton Prairie, Rock Creek and in numerous sheep camps around Mt. Adams,
where her father ran three large bands of sheep.
She attended school in Glenwood, and for a short time
in Yakima and Granger. She was united in marriage to Homer H. Babcock on
July 22, 1932 in Goldendale. To this union, one son was born in 1934. They
lived in several logging camps in Washington and Oregon, finally settling
in Glenwood until 1985, when Homer's health required them to sell their home
and move to Goldendale. Bertha had many fond memories of her days in sheep
camp with her father and brother "Mat". She enjoyed family outings at Bird
Creek Meadows, baking "dough gods", camping and cooking on the open fire.
She heard many stories of the "good ole days" from Ben Snipe's brother "Ed",
who worked as packer and herder.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brother,
nephew and her husband, Homer, who passed away in 1987. She is survived by
one son, Larry and his wife, Merdy, of Goldendale, (6) six grandchildren,
(3) great grandchildren, (1) great great grandchild, many nieces, nephews,
friends and relatives all of whom she loved dearly.
Bertha was a life long home-maker, loving wife, mother,
grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she
touched. I love you Mother.
