DEATH COMES TO PIONEER RESIDENT
KLICKITAT (Special) -- Friends and relatives were saddened
to hear that one of Klickitat's oldest pioneers, Bert Durkee, had passed
away, Friday morning at the rest home at North Bonneville. He entered the
rest home December 6, 1955.
He was born February 13, 1874 at Pentwater, Michigan.
He and his wife, Elizabeth Naomi, came here from Portland, Oregon the latter
part of October 1905 and made their home here and near Appleton.
He leaves to mourn his passing two sons and one daughter,
Mr. and Mrs. Pete Durkee of Portland and their two children, Rodney and Naomi;
Mr. and Mrs. Everett Durkee and Everett, of Klickitat and Ruby of Toledo,
Oregon; Leona Richardson and son Frederick of Vancouver, and his wife, Elizabeth,
and a grandchild. Mrs. Iva Gjerde and great grandson, Landie.
He was very active all his life until he was taken to
the rest home. He walked down the hill every day for the mail, and used a
cane to get around with. He enjoyed every ball game that was played here,
and went to every out of town game that he could get a ride, as he was unable
to drive.
He was in the sheep business for several years.
His funeral was held at White Salmon Tuesday afternoon
at 1 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home, and he was laid to rest at the Appleton
Cemetery.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, sympathy
is extended his wife and family.
