LOCAL WOMAN DIES FROM RIFLE SHOT
Tells Doctor Shot Was Accidental: Artery Is Severed

     Mrs. Betty Sculpholm, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter S. Brown of Bingen died Monday afternoon as the result of a bullet wound from a single shot 22 caliber rifle. Death came at the Hood River Hospital where she was rushed by Dr. T.G. Lathrop who was called to the Brown home.
     Death came soon after reaching the hospital as the bullet had severed a large artery that feeds the leg.
     Investigation of the tragedy was made by Sheriff Reece Jackson, Deputy Sheriff Walker and Prosecuting Attorney Edgar Canfield. Mr. and Mrs. Brown stated to them that Mrs. Sculpholm had been cleaning the weapon when it discharged the fatal shot.
     Dr. Lathrop was also told by Mrs. Sculpholm before her death that the shot was accidental.
     Mrs. Sculpholm is survived by her husband; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter S. Brown; three sisters, Mrs. June Higby, Helen and Cora Lee and three brothers, Dwain, Bud and Frank.
     Funeral services will be held today (Friday) at 2 o'clock at the Bingen Community Church with Gardner's Funeral Service in charge.
     Interment will be at the Oddfellows cemetery.

ACCIDENTAL SHOT FATAL TO WOMAN

     Mrs. Betty Sculpholm, Bingen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brown of Bingen, died Monday afternoon at the Hood River hospital as the result of wounds received from a .22 rifle which her parents said was accidentally discharged while Mrs. Sculpholm was cleaning the gun. Mrs. Sculpholm was living at the home of her parents in Bingen and had once worked at the Bingen Bus Depot Cafe.
     The bullet severed an artery in Mrs. Sculpholm's abdomen. Dr. T.G. Lathrop said that Mrs. Sculpholm stated to him prior to her death that the discharge of the gun was accidental.
