ESHELMAN
Dr. C. Alvin Eshelman of Portland died Dec. 6 at the
Portland Adventist Convalescent Center. He was 79.
Born Oct. 13, 1909,the second of four sons and S. Cloud
and Emma (Niemela) Eshelman of Centerville, Dr. Eshelman married Virginia
Halliday in December, 1953.
Dr. Eshelman attended the String Street School for two
terms before the school consolidated with the Centerville system, where he
graduated in 1928. He earned a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine from
the State College in Pullman. He practiced a short time from his home at
Centerville before going to work for the federal government.
Eshelman entered the Army in 1942 and received his discharge
in 1946 with the rank of Captain. After leaving the service, he farmed for
a few years before returning to work for the government and moving to Portland.
He enjoyed skiing, mountain climbing, photography, wood
working and traveling. He and his wife made several trips to Europe, the
Holy Lands, Mexico, Alaska and throughout the United States.
He was a member of the Grange and the Church of Christ
at Centerville. He made several pieces of fine furniture for both organizations.
His wife Virginia, two brothers, Harold and Wayne, and
several nieces and nephews to whom he was a much-loved uncle, survive him.
He was loved by the neighborhood children, who all called
him Uncle Doc. He gave of himself freely whenever people he could find an
opportunity to help others.
Funeral services were Friday, Dec. 9 at Knosher-Erdman
Funeral Home, with Pastor Greg Howell of the Community Grace Brethern Church
officiating.
Interment was in the Centerville Cemetery with military
honors under the auspices of Louis Leidl Post No. 116 American Legion.
