GRIM REAPER CALLS IN THE COMMUNITY
CARL AVERY LESTER
The funeral service of Private Carl Avery Lester was
conducted at the Chapman Chapel on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Henry T. Greene
delivered the funeral address.
Private Lester was a young man in 1886 and came to Klickitat
in 9903, and has since lived here. He went into the Service last September
and was a member of the Causual Detachment Aviation Corps, stationed at
Vancouver, Washington. He died on March 15th, aged 29 years.
He leaves to mourn his loss a father and mother; Mr.
and Mrs. C.A. Lester, of Horseshoe Bend; six brothers - Marion S. of The
Dalles; Herbert, of Wasco, Oregon; Henry, George, Dudley and Bennie, who
live with the parents. Two sisters survive him; Mrs. Gertrude Hoffman, of
Fallbridge, and Ruth, who lives with the family at the Bend.
Private Lester was a young man of excellent qualities
and was honored and respected by all who knew him. In the funeral address
Rev. Greene paid tribute to Private Lester and all others like him, who are
defending the "flag and the Republic for which it stands." He drew a parallel
between the life and work of a soldier in the service and that of all men,
saying that when the order was given for "over the top," the soldier followed
his leader, went with a purpose and with a passion.
