CHARLES PORTNER
Charles A. Portner, 30, who moved from here to Laytonville,
California, in 1950, died Thursday, May 20 in a Willits, Cal., hospital.
Death is ascribed to peritonitis. Gardner's Funeral Service transported his
body to White Salmon where funeral services were held in Gardner's chapel
at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 25.
Local members of the VFW and American Legion served as
pallbearers and conducted graveside rituals in the IOOF cemetery. George
P. George, Methodist minister officiate.
Charles Portner was born November 3, 1823 at Wagner,
N.D. From June 21, 1944 to April 24, 1946, he served with Battery A, 232
Field Artillery Battalion. He was awarded the following the medals: Victory,
Good Conduct, and European-African Middle-Eastern service.
He is survived by his wife Mary and sons, Robert, Gerald
and Russell of Laytonville; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Portner of
Bingen; three brothers, Pete and Lloyd of White Salmon and Albert of Trout
Lake; seven sisters, Mrs. Carl Ingle of Hood River; Mrs. Howard Shum, Bingen;
Mrs. Lloyd Hansen, Rapid City, S.D.; Mrs. Donald Schmidt, Roseburg, Ore.;
Mrs. Richard Mansfield, W.S.; Mrs. Lorraine Negre of Bingen and Mrs. Billy
Joe Kissinger of Klickitat.
