CARLTON ALLAWAY
Lifelong Trout Lake resident Carlton Walter Allaway died
March 28, 2001 at his home in Trout Lake, at the age of 86.
Mr. Allaway was born July 6, 1914, in Trout Lake to Delwyn
H. and Emma Pearson Allaway. He attended Trout Lake Schools, graduating from
Trout Lake High School. In school, he excelled in math and was a member of
the basketball and baseball teams. His basketball team was undefeated for
two seasons.
On Aug. 14, 1940, Mr. Allaway married Esther Elizabeth
Collins in White Salmon. The couple made their home in Trout Lake for most
of their 60 years together outside of living in Newburg, Ore. for two years
and in Hood River, Ore., for one year.
Farming was Mr. Allaway's life work. During World War
II, he raised turkeys for the war effort. He learned dairy farming from his
father and was a dairy farmer for many years. He enjoyed tilling the land
and grew hay, grain and corn.
Mr. Allaway was a past member of the Trout Lake Grange
and the Trout Lake School Board of which he served as chairman. He was one
of the organizers of the Trout Lake Fire Department and umpired school baseball
games.
Mr. Allaway is survived by his wife Esther Collins Allaway,
Trout Lake: four sons Carl Allaway, James Allaway and Daniel Allaway, all
of Trout Lake, and David Allaway, Stevenson: two daughters Donita Payne,
Vancouver, and Brenda Bryan, White Salmon; sister Mildred Knutson, Portland,
Ore.; and 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by his parents Delwyn Homer and Emma Pearson Allaway, and two sons
Kenneth George Allaway and Clayton Beryl Allaway
A graveside service for Mr. Allaway was held Saturday,
March 31, 2001, at the Trout Lake Cemetery. A memorial service was held April
1, 2001, at the Mt. Adams Baptist Church in Trout Lake.
Memorials in Mr. Allaway's name may be given to the Trout
Lake Fire Department First Responders in care of Sterling Savings Bank in
White Salmon.
