PIONEER OF 1877 PASSES THIS WEEK

Conrad B. Yeackel, a well known farmer and stockman of the Centerville sections who was taken to The Dalles hospital last week, passed away on Tuesday. The funeral services were held or Thursday of this week at the family home near Centerville, Rev. O.S. Barnum conducting the services.
Mr. Yeackel was born at Petersburg, Canada, July 3, 1850. Later the family moved to Wisconsin, where Mr. Yeackel grew to manhood. In 1871 he went to Minnesota, settled in Swift county, and engaged in farming.
In 1877 he came west to California, and in the fall of 1877 settled in Klickitat county, where he had since resided.
At the time he crossed the Columbia river at The Dalles, he had his family of three children, his wife and, mother with him, and the sum of $9.75 represented his entire capital. He took up a homestead, the present home, and with his family went into the timber to live for the first winter. The succeeding spring he sold the rails and fence posts he had cut in the timber during the winter. He found that he had a surplus capital of $50 after paying all expenses, and leaving considerable lumber to be used on his farm. At the expiration of two years he had saved enough money to permit him to break ground on his ranch, and he had continually devoted his time since then to improving the property.
Mr. Yeackel was married in Swift county, Minnesota, in 1872, to Miss Amelia Heitz, and they were the first couple to be married in that county. He has one brother, Theodore, also residing in the Centerville section. He is survived by his widow and eight children, all residents of Klickitat.
