GOLDENDALE NATIVE DIES IN YAKIMA FIRE

     Mrs. Catherine Stewart, 50, a member of the pioneer Cahill family of Goldendale, was found dead Tuesday in her burning home in Yakima. According to Dr. Andrew F. Braff, Yakima County coroner, death was caused by smoke and heat inhalation.
     Tom McDonnell, Yakima Morning Herald motor route dealer, spotted the fire inside the house and reported it to the Yakima Police Department. Although the home was outside the city limits, two city patrolmen were sent to the scene.
     City Patrolman R.C. Zilliox, first on the scene, entered a rear door but was forced to retreat by dense smoke. Fire was confined to the living room where Mrs. Stewart was found.

CATHERINE (CAHILL) STEWART

     Catherine (Cahill) Stewart died at age 50 in her home at Yakima on January 9, 1968. She was born in Goldendale and had lived in Yakima for the past 10 years.
     She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church of Yakima.
     She is survived by one son, Rollen Stewart and one daughter, Mrs. Ann Ribail both of Yakima and one granddaughter; four brothers, Robert and Martin of Goldendale, James Cahill of Wenatchee, and John Cahill, Kettle Falls; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Kayser, Goldendale, and Miss Clara Cahill of Spokane.
     Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church in Yakima with interment to follow at 2 p.m. in the Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery at Goldendale.

VALLEY WOMAN VICTIM OF EARLY-MORNING FIRE

     WEST VALLEY - Mrs. Catherine Stewart, 50, found dead Tuesday in her home at 107 North Shamrock Drive East, following a fire, died of smoke and heat inhalation.
     Dr. Andrew F. Braff, Yakima County coroner, announced the cause of death following an examination of the body and investigation at the home.
     Mrs. Stewart was found by West Valley firemen after they extinguished a blaze in the living room. Mrs. Stewart's body was on the living room floor near the fireplace.
     Fire Chief Ray Wetmore said cause of the blaze may have been a cigarette in the daveno. The daveno smoldered for some time, as only one arm and the springs were left when firemen arrived after 5:20 a.m..
     Dr. Braff said it was possible that Mrs. Stewart had been dead up to five hours.
     Tom McDonnell, Yakima Morning Herald motor route dealer, spotted the fire inside the house. He pounded at the front door several times and, when unable to arouse any one, went to Chalet Mall to telephone the Yakima Police Department at 5:18 a.m.
     Police contacted the fire department. Although the home is outside the city limits, two city patrolmen were sent to the scene.
     City patrolmen R.C. Zilliox, first on the scene, entered the house through a rear door in an effort to determine if anyone was inside. Dense smoke in the kitchen forced him to retreat.
     Wetmore said the fire was confined to the living room but there was smoke damage throughout the house.
     Mrs. Stewart was born in Goldendale and had lived in Yakima the past 10 years. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church.
     Mrs. Stewart is survived by a son, Rollen Stewart, and a daughter, Mrs. Ann Ribail, both of Yakima; four brothers, Robert and Martin Cahill, Goldendale, James Cahill, Wenatchee, and John Cahill, Kettle Falls; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Kayser, Goldendale, and Miss Clara Cahill, Spokane; and a granddaughter.
     Shaw & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

     Shaw & Sons Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
