CHARLES COATE PASSES AWAY ON SEPT. 19TH
Charles Francis Coate, a lifetime resident of Trout Lake,
Washington, passed away at the Hood River Memorial Hospital on September
19th at the age of 84 years. He was born in Trout Lake, Washington on February
24, 1889 and was a retired dairy farmer. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs.
Louise McCuistion of Hood River; a brother, James H. Coate of Portland, Oregon
and one sister, Bessie G. Schmid of Trout Lake.
Also surviving are three grandsons; Kenneth W. Coate
of Juneau, Alaska; Clarence Lee McCuistion of Hood River, Ore., Steve J.
Bene of Troutdale, Oregon. One great grandson; Andrew Bene.
He was born in a log cabin that his parents, William
and Nancy Aurelia, had built when they came to Trout Lake in April 1887 from
Ohio. His father was a Justice of Peace, a County Commissioner, a member
of the State of Washington Legislature, and a delegate to the State Conventions.
Mr. Coate lived on the farm with his family, older brother,
James and younger sister, Bessie, until he married Margaretha Guler on June
19, 1912. Then, he had built his own home on the 40 acres his father gave
him which was part of his father's homestead. This land he cleared of the
native pine trees and brush. Later he acquired more land until he had 100
acres, all of which he cleared alone - most is under cultivation now. He
had a Grade A Dairy with from 35 to 40 cows which he milked until he retired
from farming at the age of 70 years in April 1959.
He had a great admiration for all the out-doors. He loved
to hunt and fish.
Fraternally, Mr. Coate had been affiliated with the Masons
since 1910 and the Washington State Grange since 1915.
He was a member of Riverside Community Church in Hood
River, Oregon.
His wife, Margaretha Anna, preceded him in death in July
1967.
The past eight years he has spent living in Hood River
near his daughter and family, always keeping his residence in Trout Lake,
Washington. Funeral services were held Monday Sept. 24th, 2:00 p.m. at the
Presbyterian Church in Trout Lake, Washington with Rev. Arlin L. Flick of
the Riverside Community Church of Hood River, Oregon officiating. Interment
was in the Trout Lake Cemetery.
Friends may give to memorials for the Trout Lake Presbyterian
Church or the Riverside Community Church of Hood River.

Charles Francis Coate, who was born in Trout Lake, Wash.,
Feb. 24, 1889, died at Hood River Memorial hospital Sept. 19.
Mr. Coate, 84, was a retired dairy farmer and had lived
in Trout Lake until eight years ago when he moved to Hood River to be near
a daughter, Louise Aurelia McCuistion.
In addition to his daughter, Mr. Coate is survived by
a brother, James H. Coate of Portland and a sister, Bessie G. Schmid of Trout
Lake. Also surviving are three grandsons, Kenneth W. Coate of Juneau, Alaska,
Clarence Lee McCuistion of Hood River and Steve J. Bene of Troutdale; and
a great grandson, Andrew Bene of Troutdale. His wife and two sons, James
and Kenneth Harvey, preceded him in death.
