CHARLIE BLEILER

     Charlie Oscar Bleiler, a Glenwood native, died Sept. 27, 1997, in San Jose, Calif., at the age of 88.
     Mr. Bleiler was born Feb. 3, 1909, in Glenwood to Oscar David Benjamin and Anna Marie Bleiler. After graduation from high school, he built and operated his own service station. In 1942 he was married to Rhoda Anna Ragge.
     After serving four years in the United States Army, he and his wife moved to Seattle where he went to work for the U.S. Post Office. In 1952, he transferred to San Jose, Calif. He walked his route until he retired in 1975. In 1980, the couple moved back to White Salmon. They resided here until ailing health forced them to move closer to the hospital in Portland, Ore. After his wife's death in 1992, Mr. Bleiler lived with friends in White Salmon for about one year. He then lived with his brother in Salem, Ore., for the next two years. He moved back to San Jose, Calif., in January 1996, and lived with his son until his death.
     Mr. Bleiler's hobbies included gardening, stamp collecting, raising chinchillas, making bump boards and hook latch rugs. He was very active in the church, serving as an usher, deacon and financial secretary.
     Mr. Bleiler is survived by his daughter, Christine, Houston, Texas; sons, Stephen and Paul, both of San Jose, Calif.; four granddaughters and one grandson.
